We dont need another hero!

Simply because the Patriots seem to have found one, and he’s not any of the big name players you would ever have heard of. Its fair to say that there may be other NFL players who do similar things in the off season, but he’s the first one I’ve heard of, and yes, I hope that he gets a well deserved Superbowl medal tonight. Because in truth, he deserves one more than Brady, Gronkowski, Belichick and co probably do. Thats not to say they dont deserve one, just that this guy has really earned his, if they win tonight, and not for what he’s done on the football pitch.

Yes, its Superbowl tonight. For my US readers, its taking place at a sane hour, and you get to watch it. Me, it starts at 11.30 pm, and I have to be in work tomorrow, so its not going to happen! Hopefully I can catch the highlights tomorrow, or Tuesday, even if I will know the score by then.

The article?

http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/268116/from-making-11-an-hour-to-super-bowl-behind-the-surreal-year-for-patriots-bernard-reedy

I know, never heard of him, and lets face it, he’s only been with Patriots for about 3 months, on and off. But he’s on today, on the biggest night of the season, and thats the main thing. As I say, this piece isnt about the big names taking part in the game, though they will draw far more attention today, its about this lesser known guy, and what he does when he’s not playing football. Please note, he stayed in Tampa when the rest of the team escaped the hurricane last year, just so he could help!

There is one thing, love them, or hate them, that the Patriots have always been shrewd about, and thats picking up players rejected by other teams. Will Reedy prove to be one of those, who knows? As he says, regardless, give it a couple of weeks off, and he’s going back to his other job, regardless.

Will this make me a Patriots fan, I hear you ask? For tonight, definitely. Beyond that, who knows? Put it this way, Kate wouldnt have to work too hard at present for that to happen. I know, I’ve supported Buffalo for decades, but in truth, I’ve seen so much ghastly racist, and white supremacist stuff posted on their fan boards this season to feel comfortable about being involved with them any more. Logical options for me would be one of the Los Angeles teams, or Kansas City, but fine, a feelgood story like this, then well…?

But yes, definitely for tonight, go Patriots, if only for Bernard Reedy! Of course, if Kate wants to ‘convince’ me to make it more long term, I’m more amenable at present than ever before, just saying… 😉 Mentioning Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma could work. 😉 A joke that she might get, but others wouldnt, just saying…

You might have worked out the video from the title, if you havent, why not? This is quite a stunning live performance from 2009 though, not the original video. Yes, I think Clara might have enjoyed some of those outfits lol!

Whats in a name?

One of my pet hates with modern stadiums is that they dont have what I would call, a proper name, especially in the US, where seemingly nearly every team now plays in a stadium with no local name, just the name of whoever may be sponsoring it at the time. Thankfully, Dodgers Stadium, Wrigley Field, and Fenway Park (to name a few) survive at present by their original name, but for how long?

Thankfully, there are some places that regardless of how many times the name changes, most people still know them by their old name. In truth, I suspect the tale of tonight’s rant will be one of those, despite the ghastly name change.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum started to be built in 1921, opening in 1923. In its time, as well as hosting numerous teams from the Los Angeles area (including for a few years, the Dodgers, more on that later), but also hosted 2 Olympics, and may well play a part in hosting another in 2028, when the event returns to town. I wont be there to see it, even if I’m still alive by then!

But now, or more strictly correctly, in August 2019, the name will change, it will be ‘The United Airlines Memorial Coliseum’. Yes, I know, money talks, and all that! In truth, beyond the whole matter of the name change, its who the sponsors are! Yes, United Airlines.

Thats right, the company who in the last few years have had a total customer services meltdown are putting $69 million towards repairs to the stadium, presumably in a desperate attempt to improve their standing in the community? And yes, they are still as bad as ever, only last week throwing a woman off a plane, due to a ticketing error, on the way to see her dying mother for the last time. No, thanks to their incompetence, she never made it! Of course, it wasnt their fault according to them, but seriously, given those circumstances, and the fact the ticket had been paid for, what a shambles!

The amusing thing of course, is the LA reaction to this. Most of that has involved comments about buying tickets for the stadium, then having someone coming up, throwing you out of your seat, and beating you up for good measure! That attitude might improve towards them over the next 18 months, but I wouldnt put good money on it! That is of course, given the amount of bad publicity they’ve had of late, that United Airlines are still around by then! Wouldnt that be ironic?

With luck, everyone will continue to call it The Coliseum, and nothing more for the rest of time!

What I didnt know, until I did a search, was that the Dodgers actually played 1 game there after their move to Dodgers Stadium. To celebrate 50 years in town, in 2008, they played a pre season game at their old home, against Boston Red Sox. No, the stadium was no longer designed for that, but anyway…

I found this. Yes, the Boston Red Sox song, sung in Coliseum. Official attendance was over 115,000, but certainly not that many there in this shot!

That Same Old Feeling

Every so often, along comes a story at the Archive that amuses me more than most, and today has produced one of them! This one by the illustrious genius known as ‘Jukebox’.

http://192.155.80.152/ChooseToBeMe/index.html

Oh fine, why can I never get an offer like that? I’m sure by the sound of it, that even 60’s year old’s would come out with that stunning look, after a meet with Francesca lol! Oh agreed, I’d prefer a Clara Johnson, or second best, Jean Harlow version of that makeover, but given the description given of her, I’m sure I could just about cope with looking like that!

Even more so, given it would mean saying goodbye to damaged knees, damaged back, and everything else too! Yes, like Betty, I’m definitely nothing special to look at, at present, but after that transformation, oh wow! Fine, I was amused when Betty tried to resist at the end, but why am I not surprised that it was a futile gesture?

So yes, if Francesca is looking for a victim at present, it would make a heavenly 60th birthday present for me, in 6 weeks time, and counting! Well, from Friday at least!

Given that the video relates to this, I’ll slip it in now, rather than at the end. Depressing thing for me, this is all but 50 years old, and I remember it being released, and probably sang along to it, imagining I was the singer!

Thats not the only story that amused me in the wishful makeover sense today, there was this one as well

http://192.155.80.152/Admiration/index.html

Only thing is, I’d love to be everything that a certain Clara was, in this case! Be warned, this story is a little more adult than the first one, just warning… No, as far as I know, none of the pills I’m taking are having this effect on me…sadly!

Lets get ready to rumble?

Back at the start of this century, the guy behind WWE, Vince McMahon had this idea to try and bring back American Football, as it used to be played. He called it XFL, and it was so successful, it lasted one season! yes, that good. Well, now, for some reason best known to himself, he’s decided to bring it back, starting in 2020. Whether it ever gets off the ground, we will have to wait and see?

In truth, given attitudes have changed, all the concussion issues in the sport, and everything else, the idea of playing the game, as it used to be played, shouldnt be about to happen. Of course, there may be some crazy souls prepared to knock their brains to mush, but enough to man up 8 teams, as planned, I have my doubts? But unless it has some gimmick, then its just going to end up being an NFL feeder league, which I assume isnt the plan? But with current health concerns, what gimmick can they come up with, no idea?

There seems to be some belief (not seen anything conclusive myself) that this relates to the Anthem issue that there has been in the NFL this past season, which hasnt actually gone away. So, is he planning this for white players only, or what? And if, as we all hope, this issue has been righted by 2020, will that be the excuse for this never to actually happen? Who knows?

To be honest, several attempts have been made in the past to start a competing league, none with any major success. Arena football at least had variations, but even that hasnt really been a success. So?

Will this actually happen, or is it just a bunch of wealthy, right wing white men in the US trying to put pressure on players, who knows? Me, I hope it bankrupts all that get involved with it, if thats the case.

Video time. Well, given the catch phrase of WWE, I thought I’d come up with this truly awful song. Some might like it, but fine, its apt, and not much more

The perfect climate for a bad back?

Yes, as I’m sure all regulars know by now, my back has been damaged by old age, for want of a better term. Osteoporosis has caused a small fracture in my back, which I keep under control by using painkillers, both in the form of pills, and a gel, which make life sort of bearable, if nothing more. Its probably not going to improve unless I get a new cybernetic spine, or a full robot makeover, which lets face it, neither have got any chance of happening at present. Give it a few decades, and it might happen, but I’ll be long gone by then!

Apart from the general fragility of my body (my knees are a surgical disaster, leading to very poor circulation of blood to my legs), I have no desire to put up with this pain forever, so though I wouldnt mind a few more years, I dont want to talk in decades any more.

So if anyone reading this, for whatever reason wants to help with the ever increasing meds bills, and the reducing number of days that I can work per week (cut to 4, from 5), then feel free to donate here, or not, as the case may be?

Thought not, but no harm in mentioning it?

One thing that the surgery did mention to me, was living somewhere warmer than here, especially during the winter, because the cold wrecks my back. Yes, would be wonderful, but no money to make it happen, and at my age, finding a job somewhere like that might be tricky too! But yes, if someone wants to set me up somewhere warm, with the funds to look after myself, wouldnt say no. Sadly, I’m not as cute as Marion Davies as a ‘supported’ lady, in case you were hoping I was!

This morning, on one of my Forums, I found out an interesting fact, in an area I love. One of the places in the world where there is very little temperature swing throughout the year, and in a nicely warm sense, is San Diego, in California. Yes, apparently it gets chilly there in winter when it drops to 48 (9C for Brits)! But generally, doesnt often hit 80 (27C) either! Yes, my back would just love that!

I know, Chargers have left town for Los Angeles, and the Padres definitely arent the Dodgers, but I can think of worse places to live, in truth. And lets face it, that idiot Trump wants nice, white Europeans to emigrate there, just needs to change the rules, or provide me with the paperwork at least. Or a wealthy partner, or my own personal ‘Hearst’. I know, I know, no harm in hoping!

The only other place that fits the bill better, Honolulu! But there is far more rain there, and rain is not good for my joints so…

Los Angeles, wouldnt say no, but it didnt meet this match because of the heat in summer. Not that I’d mind, but strictly…

OK, video time. What could be better than a song called San Diego being played in San Diego? I’m not a Blink 182 fan, but thats just far too much fun to miss out on!

The return of the prodigal daughter

Oh fine, we’ll get to the title in good time, just bear with me. And no, for once, the title is no clue to the video lol!

So, despite a less than inspiring weather forecast, the weather was fair (well reasonably fair) this morning, so I decided to head back to Haworth today, as I’d originally planned, prior to seeing a wet forecast. By now, I’ve done the trip to Bradford so often that I’m not even going to mention that, beyond a feisty wing mirror outside the bus that the driver must have tried to re-position about 20 times. Crazy thing was, he still got into Bradford on time, despite that! I think because the previous bus was late (we caught it up, before the mirror incident), we had no one hardly to pick up.

The most notable point of the journey to Keighley was the section through Bingley. When I was younger, that was the main road, and could be a bottle neck at times. Now, there’s a bypass round the town, so far less traffic on that road. One thing that hasnt changed in over 40 years, despite road improvements, is the traffic jams in Keighley town center. The rail station, to the bus station, which is 400 yards at most, took about 15 minutes! Anyway, after a refreshment break, on to the main goal, Haworth.

When I was young, you used to get a battered looking old Metro bus on that route, which wheezed its way up the steep hill out of Keighley, towards Haworth. Now you get a flash new bus, that tells you what the next stop is, and they are all named after the 3 more famous Bronte sisters, seemingly. Rode a bus named Charlotte on the way there, and an Anne on the way back. Positive there is an Emily too, but wouldnt bank on rest of family, especially the 2 eldest sisters, who died before reaching the age of 13!

On arrival at Haworth, I took my chance at the bottom of the hill named Main Street, and got off the bus. There’s a good reason for that, my first ever ‘real home’ was near the bottom of said street. Now that, and its next door neighbor have been knocked into 1 cottage, which is now seemingly one of these rental places. The fact that its originally 2 cottages is given away by 2 facts, the street jumps a number there, and secondly the old door is still there, though nowadays with plants in the doorway, to stop anyone using it. No, our old door is still there, though it now has 1 of those coded locks on it, presumably so the people renting in out can get in without a key? Well, it may be a new door, not sure, but its the entrance you still use, all the same.

One blessing of visiting Haworth in January, over peak summer, is the lack of visitors! Fine, the fact that the Parsonage shuts to visitors during January might have something to do with that! Yes, you guessed it, just as I reached the top of Main Street, approaching the church, the heavens opened! Maybe someone was crying for my return to the village, who knows? I doubt it, but…? Anyway, I went in the church (where all but Anne are buried), and paid my respects, before heading back down the hill in the rain. Then, for one last time, I stopped outside 51 Main Street, and paid my respects to my first home, maybe for the last time. Thats right, there is no 49 any more!

I then took the ‘short cut’ back down to the bottom of the village, near the railway station, passing the school I would have gone to, had I stayed in the village, which is now a set of apartments, called Haworth Mews. To add to the moment, as I got down by the station, there was a steam train parked in the station, seemingly doing a goods run, probably topping up the souvenir shop, though I didnt investigate. But no, no passenger carriages, and besides I checked the timetable, no trains today, not at this time of year.

I didnt time my return well, because I didnt know the timetable any more, so stood for about 15 minutes in the rain, waiting for a bus to take me back home. Well, 3 buses to get all the way home, strictly! Will I go back? Who knows? Its taken me about 10 years to do so this time, and if it goes that long again, I cant see it happening. In truth, my back, even now, supported by a brace felt the climb, so give it a few more years, and it will probably be beyond me. And believe me, that hill is not wheelchair friendly lol!

But yes, one thing, I can now say, at long last, I’ve got back there eventually! I stopped living there when I was a young child, but used to return on a regular basis up until the turn of the century, but after that, with no reason to do so, visits have become rare.

I wonder how things would have played out if I’d grown up in Haworth, instead of moving down South, because of my father being in the navy? The truth, we will never know! Happily married, with children, who knows? Lol, I doubt it somehow, but…?

OK, the video, what this probably was, but not Doris Day! I found this on a search to see what I could find, and…! Not the most famous singing Beatle, but this is so out of left field, and in truth, pretty good!

Behind the Green Card

Fine, you have to love politicians, not. No, before anyone gets excited, this isnt about UK politics, my job is too good for that. On the other hand, the chaos ensuing in the US, where the bewigged, orange idiot is in charge…?

I wish I could convince myself that American government grinding to a halt doesnt suit his plans, but I’m failing badly. Anyway, thanks to some of his crazier ideas, let alone the racist ones, the budget agreement in US has ground to a complete, and utter halt. I’m not saying the Democrats are perfect (they probably arent), but compared to the craziness of the Republicans, yes, its not hard to work out which party I feel sorry for.

No, its not either of them, its the poor workers who have no idea what is going on, when they’re going to get paid, or anything! Thankfully, despite everything, the main issues are protected, which doesnt help with the amusing jibe in my blog tonight, but I can bring it up, anyway.

Yes, probably wisely, Immigration issues are one of those protected areas, where life goes on. Well, until they get sick of not being paid, or 3 groups of people finally see the light, and get things sorted, but dont hold your breath on that!

But fine, if anyone in that department, while they’re not being watched so closely fancies sending me a working visa, or a green card…? 😉 Would make a lovely 60th birthday gift, lol! No, I know, not going to happen, but I can hope! Then I’d just need a role, and…? 😉

Please, America, lets get something sorted out soon. But whether Trump, and his cronies will let sense happen, not holding my breath!

OK, video time. Well its got 3 of the 4 words in the blog title in it!
