Suitable home town for an LGBT lady?

One of the things I’ve got into on You Tube since my brain failure gave me more time to view these things, is those silly 10 places you should/shouldnt do various things in. One guy I really enjoy is someone by the name of Briggs, who does these things. They tend to be lengthy, (as in more than 5 minutes) but tend to be amusing, and informative to me about places in the US that I really ought to see/live in, and about places I really need to avoid at all costs. If I can find the relevant one easily, I’ll post it after the song.

Anyway, of late he’s been doing a couple about affordable towns/cities in the US that you might actually want to live in. Well, given I’m going to (almost certainly) need to do medical retirement anytime soon, these hold special appeal to me. OK, 2 issues, the big one being that I dont currently have the right to live permanently in the US, due to being British, and I dont see Dopey Don letting me do that in the near future, and besides with my medical issues getting worse, its not the ideal country for me, lets face it.

The snag with most of these affordable places for me, even if I could move there? Well, lets say that to my eyes, and ears, most of them are not in what you would term LGBT friendly states. So given he asks for ideas for future videos, I mentioned that a more LGBT friendly list of this kind might be handy. I also mentioned that it was a shame that 2 of the towns suggested (which sounded nice) were in an area of interest to me. One was McPherson, in Kansas, the other was Muskogee, Oklahoma, which isnt a million miles from Clara Johnson country.

Anyway, along with a few less than charming words about my comments, someone made this comment

Oklahoma City, and Kansas City are as liberal/diverse as NYC

Now maybe I’d be safer in this area than the ‘bible belt south’, (not hard with what Alabama and Georgia have been passing of late), but as diverse as NYC? Maybe these 2 big cities are approaching that, but the surrounding area, including Muskogee isnt? Or is Muskogee fine, really? I must admit, I had no issues in KC, survived fine in Cherryvale, for a visit, but to live in the area? Fine, given my residence issues, living there is only hypothetical, but now I’m curious. I’d love feelings from ‘locals’ (if any see this) on this whole matter.

But yes, I hope this is the only time in my life I’m ever accused of being a right wing, white racist bigot! Mind, there was the Lillian Gish, movie history issue recently, too, so who knows, lol?

OK, video time. Given I then went and checked out Muskogee on Wikipedia, I found out there was a song about the place, so guess what you’re getting. Maybe Clara wont be the only Okie in the physical line yet!

To serve their masters truly

For those of you with accounts on You Tube, or indeed those who use it regularly, you will be aware that nowadays, as with so many things, our previous choices are tracked, and therefore the recommendation list you get will be full of videos that might just tempt you. I know, sinister stuff, but more on that shortly.

I’m not sure when, or why You Tube first suggested to me that I might be interested in the videos relating to what are known as numbers stations. I can only assume its because of that wicked mind control/brainwashing stuff I look at from time to time, but who knows?

Yes, to say they are a weird, and wonderful bunch would be to put it mildly. And no, despite the name, not all are actually listing numbers. Its believed most of it is a throwback to the years of the Cold War, though some (notably in Russia) are still active, but sadly, the one I’m going to focus on tonight, isnt. I dont know if it was the tune that attracted me especially, or the refined, very British voice of the lady reading the numbers (its suspected its automated, but who knows?), or the delightful emphasis that she puts on the final number in the set of 5. Yes, it is a British transmission, suspected (but never confirmed) to be MI6 to spies, and sent from a military base on Cyprus. As I say, its no longer active, last known transmission was in 2008, though of course no one knows why it stopped at that point, as there is no logical reason why it finished then, after about 28 years.

Was it just transmitted through Cyprus, or was it actually broadcast from there? I suspect it was the latter, though I very much doubt there was a lady sat in an office there, making the recordings, then distorting her voice slightly. Most likely, a lady recorded the numbers somewhere in one sitting, and then a device just read the series of numbers in her voice, as typed in, by someone else. Emphasis on last number, who knows, other than the assumption it was to signify the last number of the set?

As with all things espionage, I doubt we will ever get any answers to these questions. Lets face it, if a young lady recorded these back in 1980, when the station first seems to have gone on line, she’s as old, or slightly older than me. Quite possibly she was slightly older than that, so she is either in her very senior years, or passed away? Of course, it might not have been sending messages to spies, over the world, but its a reasonable assumption it was, during the height of the Cold War.

Or was there really a lady, presumably well paid, who lived on Cyprus for 28 years, reading these numbers over short wave radio at certain times of day? And if so, did she know what she was reading, or did she, like a good actress, just read the script placed in front of her? Would be an interesting role, if that was the case, for sure!

OK, the video. The station was known as Lincolnshire Poacher, for the call sign at the start of the message, and yes, the blog title is a line from said folk tune. The owner of the voice, and the significance of the message, who knows, probably better we dont! But hopefully, someone, all that time ago, did! Here is one of those messages, thanks to the Conet Archive

River City Fun

Well, actually, to be honest, this got even more fun when I typed River City into You Tube, and found the video.

Yes, the break is over, thankfully all the writing I planned on doing, and a bit more has all finally got finished today, and I recently sent my efforts over to my wonderful, and long suffering editor, who does a wonderful job of turning my scratchings, into readable English, probably of the US kind, but given where my main audience is, not a problem.

Oh, the title? Well that relates to the inspiration for my writing, to do 1 piece for JD’s anthology of superhero (and heroine) pieces, set in the fictional metropolis of River City. Though now, it seems there is one place in the US, that I visited recently, that also calls itself River City. Pure coincidence, I’m sure.

But yes, one of my 2 characters I wrote for, was such fun, I didnt stop at 1 piece, I’ve ended up doing 5, and she was so much fun, I might even do more in the future, especially if her stories prove popular, when they go on sale. Dont worry, it will only be $2.99, for 5 short stories, an absolute bargain, just a perfect gift for Christmas lol!

Yes, no surprise, it was Flapper Girl, more formally known as Belinda (Billie) Nicholson, that started the writing spree. Once I got the whole 20’s idea in my head, I went with the flow, and it really did flow, much to my delight! As I say, if I can come up with a few fresh ideas, there may well be a follow up. Not till January at least, though, as thats the next time I will have the time to write, no chance of doing so while I’m working, sadly.

Funny thing is, if it wasnt for Mr Darksong, I would never have created her in the first place, so special thanks to him, as thinking up a Superheroine character would have been the last thing on my mind, when trying to come up with an idea.

But now, I’m pleased with it, just hope others are too, though the first one seems to have gone down quite well so far. Hopefully my editor will give me the thumbs up on the other 4, when he sends them back.

Ah, that connection I mentioned? Well think back to where I was in September, so it amused me greatly to find this video, I must say. Personally, I might add, this is not my music tastes, but this was just too good a coincidence not to use it.

Seeking out fond memories

And yes, not only is the title of this piece a corny wordplay on the group in the videos, this blog only really came about through what I term a You Tube hunt.

Alright, the least fond memory, 3 months ago, about this time, I was getting crazy ideas that the Bills might well be play offs bound, given the way their season had started. Sadly the wheels did finally come off the rails halfway through the season, and this Sunday was the day they were eliminated of having any chance of doing so. I know, they beat the Patriots (sorry Kate), but suspect the rematch isnt going to be so pretty on current form lol.

So yes, having pounded through some reading, I thought I’d hit You Tube for a while, and amongst things. I found 2 songs from a group of my youth. Yes, the videos are black and white, though one of them is from 2002! Both are covers of songs from the 60’s by the way.

The first is a Bee Gees song, though not the era most remember them from. I dont actually remember the lights going down any night while I was there, but I suspect they did, it was just that I was asleep by then.  I had a lovely time in Massachusetts, got to meet 2 lovely people there (well more than 2, but 2 principally come to mind) and this song let me look back on that. This is a 2002 video apparently, you can tell by the age of the group, because the black and white film wouldnt give it away otherwise lol.

Ironically the older song has some colour images mixed into the film! Island of dreams might rank as a fanciful title for ‘The Cape’, but it certainly seemed a lovely place on my first visit. Planning to have a few more ‘dreams’ there next September too, really looking forward to that. There is Seatlle inbetween, which I’m looking forward to going back to, just hoping the long plane journey isnt too much for my aging limbs, thats all.

The really frightening thing is, I  do 95% know what area I’m going to in April 2013, somewhere in Northern NY state, just the final destination to be decided even now. You could say its a B.A.R choice! 😉 Think it will be the B, but dont quote me on that!
