I hope that something good is going to happen

Yes, fine, I’ll get to that blog title in a moment, but firstly, lets remember the awful events that happened in Boston, 3 years ago today. Yes, the tragic explosions at the end of the Boston Marathon, that saw much loss of lives, and limbs. Not that it was hard to forget it, given its the only day I can remember a baseball game that starts in the morning! A bonus for me, of course, given thats a 4 pm start over here, but anyway…

Ironically, 3 years on, Boston managed to conjure up defeat, from the jaws of victory today, but thankfully everything else went off without incident, and thats the main thing.

Oh, the hopes of something good happening? Yes, I’ve done it again, I was quietly sat, with only one job interview lined up for the week, Friday lunchtime, on the other side of Leeds. Ironically, that would see me working at the Job Center, instead of signing on there, should I get it. So yes, you’ve guessed what happened, an email asking me if I was available for a job interview, as I’d impressed a potential employer. Fine, except they want to do it on Friday too, and its not close to Leeds! In terms of places that my North American friends might find on a map, its just outside Dewsbury.

I offer back, is any other day possible, but seemingly not? So then I try to plan it, so that I can just about use my day rider pass (only good after 9.30, when rush hour is over) that I’d got for the other job, but again, no. So fine, I’m doing it, at 10.00 in the morning, so I’ll probably end up with a gap between the 2 interviews, when I cant do a lot, but…Yes, hopefully something good is going to happen, through all this.

Oh, and if you ignore the difference in time zones, at this time, exactly 1 year ago, I was a thoroughly 40’s girl, at the Film Noir party in Hollywood. Yes, heels, dress, the works! Heels were fine until I ended up walking nearly a mile back to the hotel, anyway! That was certainly something good that happened!

Right, the video. Yes, a few clues thrown in, here. I did actually find a live version of this, but its a very abbreviated version, and lets face it, this is one of those songs that could never sound as good live. So, instead, last years remastered version. Now, I find it hard to tell the difference in these things, but I’m sure there is some?

Cheer up, sleepy Jean!

Fine, technically its a cheat, but Harlean did become Jean, so…live with it! 😛 Besides which, its a great song, and video!

So what has cheered up little Jean, you might be asking? Well, apart from the fact that she’s finally got a job offer, and yes, its that one where I said the wage was too good to be true, so I will find out about that, at least! I still cant believe that an ordinary call centre job is offering £13.50 ($19.50) an hour, but I cant complain, if true. Oh fine, lets face it, I would be the one person who would love it, if it did involve literal interfacing with the computer system, wouldnt I? 😉 Or if we’ll really be working from an alien spaceship, hundreds of miles above the Earth, then great! No, sadly, I doubt very much either will happen, but a girl can dream! No dress code, so maybe we do get offered silver body suits to wear at work? Again, I wish! Though officially, I’ll be working in Halifax!

In other good news, yes, the passport matter has now finally been sorted out in full, after one last call on Friday. Someone had missed one important document, and the passport I’d sent in, but someone else in the office confirmed they had them, would authorise it there, and then, so should have it by the middle of the week. Thats it, I’m Harlean Carpenter now, for life, unless I marry (ha ha), I guess? Even then, I might not be keen on changing that wonderful name.

Oh, and my little bedroom here, is now somebody else’s office. No, dont panic, I havent been evicted yet, and as long as this job is real, and I’m not sleeping on an alien space craft in the future, I’ve changed rooms, now got one room as my little apartment. Kitchen, and bathroom are still the house facilities, but otherwise…Yes, it will take some sorting out, as I’ve lost a lot of storage space, but at least now I can afford the new chest of drawers, and maybe a second small wardrobe, now I’ve got a job!

Fine, I probably should have got a lottery ticket yesterday, but my outdoor clothes are buried in a bag somewhere, in my room, so didnt happen! Oh, and lastly, seems like I’m doing a vintage clothing shoot, in 3 weekends time. Not sure if it will be here, or Hull, at present. He’s happy to come to me, but its a train line I havent travelled in years, and I suspect he has more space than me, too. Should be great, wherever its done.

OK, the blog title isnt only a play on Jean’s name change, though I’m more than delighted to be using her old name. It also works for the video too. I know, shock horror, and all that!

How wild should I be in Hollywood?

Well, around the time I guess I will finish writing this blog, I should be at Atlanta airport, trying to grab a decent coffee (and probably some cake) before catching my connecting flight to Los Angeles, and my hotel in Hollywood, hard to believe it will be so soon. OK, fine, short of something amazing happening, this will be an out of work person heading for Hollywood, in a reasonably luxurious manner, but hey, I might as well get some pleasure out of the redundancy pay off, might be the only thing I do enjoy out of it!

Yes, the seats are a grade up on economy, for the second time in my life, though not as extravagant as I would have done, had I got the money, and already had a job lined up. So no, not business class, but what one calls ‘economy comfort’, and the other calls ‘premium economy’. The hotel at least, my normal sensible budget type, though I must say, for me, Quality Inns quite fit my needs.

But then comes the burning question, how wisely should I spend while I’m over there? After all, I’m only likely to get to Hollywood (and Beverly Hills) once, so…No, I dont mean in the sense of Universal Studios, and Disney, those things hold little interest for a vintage loving girl like me. No, what I mean, is if I get the chance to live the vintage life, should I do so, and to some degree, ignore the extra cost?

No, I dont mean drinking champagne at the swanky hotels. Well, not unless someone has fallen for my charms (ha ha), and is paying for it. What I do mean, is something like this.

http://americancinemathequecalendar.com/content/17th-annual-film-noir-festival-closing-weekend-party-the-guilty

Now, that would be fun, but given I should be spending pennies wisely at that time (of course I could find a job between now, and then, but no breath holding around here), is that just a silly spend of money I should be saving? I know what my ‘inner Harlow’ would say, go out, have fun, and enjoy yourself, just for once. But my ‘outer, practical Yorkshire lass’ is likely to have a fit at spending money on something like this, at a time like this. Of course, going to something like this might be my big break in the movies, so… (yes, I am joking at this point)

Mind, the funny thing is, if I’d still been in my job, I wouldnt have been extending the trip, and couldnt have gone anyway, it would have been happening the evening I landed in town. Technically, the other practicality should be, packing of clothes, especially nice dresses. And yes, normally when I go away for a week, I can pack comfortably 1 case going out, and just about squeeze everything in coming back. And yes, this time, its 10 days! Thankfully, because I’m travelling in ‘luxury’, I can take 2 cases. No, I’m not planning on 2 large cases, I’m not that strong. But 2 medium cases, given that I will get taken to the airport, and collected at both ends (that wonderful person, Nicole at this end, and one of those shuttle things in LA), I wont have to get cases too far. So, packing an extra dress, or two…?

The other thing that concerns me, is going somewhere like this, when I will quite literally, as a visitor to town, know no one. Also, I’m a non gambler (well, apart from Grand National), and like Ms Harlow, I’m not a good dancer. But…the chance to dress up, 30’s style, in Hollywood, can I seriously resist that? Possibly not! I know, Jean wouldnt care less, and would soon make friends, but this is me, so…just let loose my inner Jean, I guess, and see what happens?

So, if anyone just wants to post a comment, telling me I really ought to just go wild, and enjoy myself, feel free to do so. Hey, use a false name, or anonymous, just say something! I know people read these, I see the stats! I feel I should, but its just the thought of spending money, in this way…aargh!

OK, piece over, lets cut to the video. A group I love, recorded in LA, of a song I love too.

I do like Monday’s

Well, the plan was for today to be a fairly quiet day, to give Kate a relative break, before the big drive to Cherryvale tomorrow, the home town of Louise Brooks. I suspect they dont get a huge number of visitors, even less so from the UK, so it will be quite something tomorrow, I’m sure. But thats looking into the future, so…

About 11.30 we headed off to the Westport district of Kansas City, home to a vintage clothing store that Kate had been tipped off about. It was sound advice, I must say. It didnt take me long to find a gorgeous Harlow like cape, and dress, but in a size so small, I would never get into it, without losing at least 10 pounds, and I’m not a big girl! And then I saw it, the dress, and cape, so absolutely perfect, I didnt want to look at the price tag, especially as it was in a larger size, that I would get into. Pleasant surprise, $100 including a cape/jacket, so now what could go wrong?

Seemingly, nothing. I tried it on, it fitted, it looked gorgeous, and I ended up getting 20% off, on top of that bargain price. So, brooch, and clutch bag later (same discount), I left the store, absolutely thrilled. In theory, I need a hat, but Kate is working on that. If I get a picture of the dress during the week, I will post it.

After that, my first taste of mid west barbecue food. Loved it, pork ribs, the meat literally falling off the bone, and all that.

Then late afternoon, back here and a relaxing evening. Oh, a delight I dont normally get, Monday Night Football. Because for me, its silly hours of Tuesday morning football! Got a reminder of just how gorgeous Jon Gruden is because of that, swoon.

So, Monday, Monday, it just turns out that way

Tomorrow, Cherryvale, birthplace of Louise Brooks, looking forward to that.

The ultimate 30’s transformation (for me at least)

Alright, I’m now hoping for fine weather on June 14th, as I’ve decided to do the Postmodern Jukebox concert, in Manchester, in style. So I’m booked in for a 30’s style make up session (I’ll miss those infamous Harlow eyebrows though) with someone, might even get her to give me a beauty spot (a la Jean), why not?

I’ve also arranged for my hair to be styled that day, and I really didnt even have to tell Sophie what style of look I was aiming for, she knows already!

No, as far as I know, I dont have any genuine vintage outfits, though I may have struck lucky in a charity shop without knowing it. But lets settle for vintage style look, and I have plenty to choose from! Dress, just maybe, but if I’m going by train, on the night that England play their first game in the World Cup, it might look a bit out of place. But a blouse, and slacks, under a coat should be fine, and Jean always preferred the latter look of choice, anyway.

Given most of my readers here are in the US, this is more a touch of wild optimism, but…if anyone reading this, knows of anyone going to the concert, from the Huddersfield area, with a spare seat in a car, then let me know. Happy to provide petrol money, will cost me about £12 on the train, plus a taxi home when I get back, so…would be so much more fun in an old fashioned dress!

Oh, and if any hypnotist out there wants to trance me, so I think I am Harlow going to the show, then…yes, kidding, I think? 😉

Sadly, the 30’s transformation, this time around at least, will be for 1 night only! Unless…

The video, despite the comments, I’m pretty sure its not Harlow singing, as far as I know, her singing voice left something to be desired, and was always dubbed. I’m not convinced its her playing the piano either!

Patriots Day, Boston

Ideally I wanted to post this yesterday, but hey, little things like work have a bad habit of getting in the way!

Thankfully, yesterday, Patriots Day passed off peacefully in Boston. So alright, fine, the Red Sox lost, but I cant have everything! Nearly pulled off a dramatic win (I got home in time for the bottom of the 8th innings), but it wasnt to be. But everything else…was beautiful, in its own way.

Unlike a year ago. Ironically, the Red Sox won that day, a walk off hit against the Green Monster gaining the result. The team then went off to get ready to fly out to Cleveland, where they were next playing. Meanwhile, downtown, the Boston Marathon was in its final stages, the winners having long since finished, the fun runners now filing in. As is known, 2 bombs went off near the finishing line, killing 3 people, and injuring over 200 more, an awful event. One policeman died 3 days later, when they were trying to capture the bombers.

Back at Fenway Park, they heard the explosions, just as they were about to leave for the Airport. By the time they got there, and even more so, by the time they reached Cleveland, it was all over the news. Ironically, Cleveland were now managed by a former Red Sox manager, Terry Francona, so the whole occasion was especially sad for more than just the visiting team.

Anyway, what happened next, is now history. The team picked up on the whole ‘Boston Strong’ matter, and for the rest of the season, said emblem was seen at Fenway Park. Neil Diamond turned up in person to sing ‘Sweet Caroline’, a Red Sox tradition now, and the team turned on the performances. Yes, thats right, they went from worst, to first, in one glorious year.

And on the celebration parade, at the point where the bombs exploded, the bus stopped, the players got off, and paid their tributes, a touching moment. Lets just forget the beards they grew though…facepalm!

So alright, I guess I ought to put up the Neil Diamond video, right? Wrong, this is much more fun. Besides which, I know my dear friend Kate cant stand the whole Sweet Caroline thing, so she might appreciate it more this way.

Given my love of vintage, discovering Postmodern Jukebox was an absolute delight for me. I have to say that my office is nothing like this, I only wish it was!

What is more, later this year, they are going on tour, dates below, and they are coming to Manchester, the UK version, though I have seen its on a Saturday, so might be tricky for me! But I will try to get there, I suspect. The dates:

We’re going on tour! Come visit the Postmodern Jukebox universe (preferably, while wearing your best vintage clothes)!

Yes, they’re playing Boston, which is why I didnt mind sneaking this in. I would love to go to the Ruby Lounge, in vintage clothing, but given I would have to get there, and back by train, on a Saturday night, I suspect not! But if anyone has a vintage car, and wants to take me, boop, boop a doo! Might even be rumble seat weather by then, at least for going over!
