Who me, a pilgrim girl? Dont remember being one, but…?

Let me add that the ‘again’ in the title of the blog is only technical, as I never remember playing a pilgrim girl in any of my acting parts, and refers more to the video tonight than any part I might have played. Doesnt mean I havent (if I remembered every role I’ve played, I’d be stunned), mind.

But what I have done, just once before, is celebrate Thanksgiving Day in America, a few years ago in Albany, New York (well, technically it was that place across the river, beginning with R, but I’d never spell that right, and my hotel was in Albany, so…), though I intend to add to that number now, if possible, now I’m retired.

I dont actually remember when the snow started, so whether it was the Thursday, or the Friday, when I went to a nearby (to my hotel) shopping centre for my first experience of ‘Black Friday’, long before it spread like it has over here in UK. Beyond the fact that even if my second Thanksgiving experience was with the same wonderful host, it wouldnt now be in Albany, as he now works, and lives some way south of there. Any details he wants to give away (including which year it was!), I will let him decide how much to say!

Its fair to say that my second experience is not going to be as a hostess, just saying before anyone suggests it! I know of others who are happy to host me, and previous host will be among them, I’m sure, but we will see who gets the ‘honour’ of that. Only way it will be LA is if Musso & Frank offer to host me for free, lol!!! Not going to happen, I’m certain. Well, I’m open to LA offers, but know of few there who would want me at a family gathering, so…?

But yes, next year, might be that year, or might need to be 2021, as Eric is 80 on 24th next year, and looking at calendar, Thanksgiving will be 26th, so possibly doable, but tricky, and probably pricey, so…? Maybe I need to find that Pilgrim girl outfit, lol?

So to all my American friends celebrating Thanksgiving day today, have a wonderful day. Well, assuming you read it on the right day, lol? If not, I hope you had a good one!

Video, well my favourite ‘suitable’ singer recorded a song called ‘I’m Going To Be A Country Girl Again’, hence the twist for the blog title. Just to say for those seeing both, the blogs will be same tonight, with one omission which some might work out. This is the Sesame Street version of the video, which is standard entertainment value for that show. This is edited version of blog, by the way

We talk in C, you talk in F

To those not getting the title, think temperatures. Here in the UK, as with so many parts of the world, we do them in Centigrade. But the US is one of few now that still does them in Fahrenheit. It means I still tend to think in the latter, because otherwise most of my friends across the Pond would think it was always below freezing over here. It does give me some fun moments over here when talking to Brits, and I do temperatures in F, and they look at me as if crazy lol.

Of course thats just one of numerous things that despite supposedly talking the same language, English, that is different between us, and the US. We put a u in so many words that Americans dont, and we pronounce words differently too. And thats before you even get to the whole lift/elevator thing too.

Anyway, last week one of my fellow EMCSA writers did a play on this in his story

https://mcstories.com/SnapsToClicks/index.html

No, I dont know which side of the pond he’s actually on, by the way.

Of course the snag with a story like this is that most of the amusement is lost unless you travel between the UK, and the US, like I do. Mind, to add to the confusion, though strictly we are now a metric country, all the road signposts are still in miles, not kilometres, and all our horse racing is still in miles, furlongs, and yards too, not metres. Yes, I remember when Ireland was changing between the two, you would find signposts in miles, others in kilometres, and no clue as to which was which, beyond (but not infallibly) the age of the signs, in that old ones would be miles, new ones kilometres, but anyway…

OK, the video, one of the songs most suitable for the issue discussed. It proves that not only could Fred, and Ginger dance in shoes (her in heels), but on roller skates too!

We will be fine…Apollo 11

So fine, thats not the flight number in the song tonight, but hey, who’s counting?

50 years ago today, a child saw a space rocket take off, complete with lunar module, and a 2 couple of now famous astronauts who were going to be famous for being the first to walk on the moon, but lets pass a thought for the poor man left behind in the rocket while they grabbed all the glory.

They had been building up to it, with the previous flight circling the moon, but not sending anyone down to the surface. I missed the actual first step live seemingly, because accordingly to the internet, it happens in the middle of the night my time, and good 11 year old girls with school the next day would have been asleep. Well, I assume I had school the next day, but given that term would be nearly over, and I would have already sat the exams to go to Grammar School that autumn, I cant be 100% sure. But even so, at about 3.30 am, I was in bed asleep!

Of course there are those who say it was all faked, in a studio, somewhere in the US. But given their rivals like the USSR acknowledged the event, I’m of the group who believe it was real. Of course there are some who believe no one has ever been in, or sent anything into space, but how we watch live events, from the other side of the world, without satellites, dont ask me?

But hey, I might have readers that genuinely believe I’m a robot, or an alien, so besides all that…?

It must be strange, standing on the Moon, looking back at Earth, but I doubt I will ever find out for myself. But a few men know, at least.

Oh, one piece of trivia before I finish. This was the first time that the command centre wasnt an entirely male affair. Yes, shock horror, one woman was allowed in for the first time. Oh my, hasnt the world moving on in that sense in the last 50 years. for sure?

OK, video time. Strictly this is credited to Adam Ant, but the backing group are all the Ants, so regardless…

Oh, fine, we need something relating to the actual flight, but fortunately, OMD to the rescue. Though given this is from Sugar Tax, its not the famous classic lineup

Its a mixed up, muddled up world

Oh fine, I might have wanted to avoid one of the great faux pas of the year, but OK, I cant resist. And besides its not really British/EU politics, well not in a genuine sense at least.

You must have heard about it, on the Donald Trump show (supposedly the 4th of July parade) in Washington, he claimed that the American troops, in 1776 captured the airports from the British. Well, in truth, he could have been talking about the 1812 war, as his speech was a bit confusing, but either way, there weren’t a lot of airports back then, as it wasnt until about 100 years after the latter that planes were even invented.

The memes relating to this have gone crazy on social media, unsurprisingly, I’m sure you must have seen them. Despite some classics, including Washington as a Jet Fighter pilot, I think my favourite was actually the American Airlines Stewardess from 1776, because hey, I loved the ‘uniform’ from that era! Would I wear it, you bet I would!

I’m not going to beat him down any more over this, everyone has already beaten me to it, lets face it. But I’ll break the bad news to him, that Britain intends to invade shortly, using our nice fleet of hyper-sonic space craft that have just arrived from 2219. As for the missiles they have, oh wow…

So, while we’re having some mixed up, muddled up air travel, from either 1776, or from 2219, lets go with a song in support of my LGBT brothers and sisters, which I know Donald would hate. Well, unless they’re very young, seemingly! No, not proved, but Epstein is a ‘very good friend’ of his, so you have to wonder, especially given what he said about his daughter, but besides that…

maybe I should change the line to ‘Girls can be robots’ or ‘Girls can be aliens’ lol? Hmm?

Ode to golf?

Yes, for the next 3 days, Europe, and the US will be ‘at war’, and it will be nothing to do with a certain bewigged idiot, either. I’m sure if he had his way, it would be more like war, but lets just ignore him for now. Yes, its that time again for the Ryder Cup.

This time, its being held in Europe, in France, but sadly, no French player has made the European team. I’m surprised that none of their players was made a non playing vice captain, but hey, that probably makes far too much like sense!

Over the years, the Ryder Cup matches have varied between very friendly events, with just an element of competitiveness, right through to almost outright war, at least as far as the US saw it. Thankfully, given the 2 captains this year, I can see it being fiercely competed for, but no signs of outright aggression to opponents, as there has been in past. I say this, because I saw the opening ceremony (well, most of it) this afternoon, and thats the way it seemed to me at the time. How it plays out tomorrow, when play starts, we will have to wait and see.

Sadly, the only day I will see much of it is Sunday, as I will be working through most of the other 2 days play, but I hope for a close, and exciting contest, held in reasonably good spirit, if not better than that!

I think it will be close, and much though I’d love to see Europe win the title back, my head says the US will win narrowly. But fine, I’d be thrilled to be proved wrong! Bonne chance to all 24 players though, on both teams.

OK, video tonight, 2 for the price of one. Firstly, what could almost be described as a prog rock version of the so called EU anthem, Ode To Joy.

Secondly, the more traditional version, but fine, I know which I think is more fun!

A reason to miss the US in 2026!

In truth, being practical, I suspect that 2024, or 2025 will be my last trip to the US, due to financial issues, post retirement, even assuming I last that long, as given I have no idea how long my back will be up to work, or long distance travel, I may not even get that far. But everything permitting… 2024 being my retirement year, and if I have enough saved (unlikely now I can only do a 4 day week), I might push for 2025, but as that would also be the end of my current passport, that may well be it? Of course, if I even want to go into Europe… We will have to wait and see? Maybe I’ll just retire to Blackpool, and live the life of a lady from the past, lol?

But yes, this week, I’ve been given an even better reason to avoid the US in 2026, the awarding of the Soccer World Cup to North America (primarily the US) in that year, something I will happily avoid, assuming I live that long, of course. I know, its great for tourism, if you like the sport, but as someone who dislikes it intently…I’ll happily pass!

Of course, today is an apt day to post this, given that the 2018 version started today, in Russia. Not a country that I, as a Brit would be rushing to visit currently, even less so as a Civil Servant, and all the extra issues that might bring. Of course, the irony is, that the US hasnt qualified, so Trump wont be going to see his friend, Putin, so… Fine, kidding, OK, I think? 😛

I have entered a few free competitions revolving around the event, if only because should I get things really right (and I got today’s score wrong, for starters), I could win some extra money, which would be really handy at present. But no, me, and soccer, no  chance, beyond the fact that these things are pure guesswork, and I can make guesses lol!

So no, I neither know, nor care who might be going to win it. I assume it will be one of the usual candidates, but as to me watching any of the games, no chance! Similar to me winning any prizes lol!

Funnily enough, as a child, I remember watching England win the World Cup in 1966, at a time when my father was trying to get me into the sport, and failing! Since then, nothing!

The only other soccer thing I can think of? Well, next seasons Premier League fixtures were announced today, but no, I havent yet checked when I have to try and avoid the crowds coming out from Huddersfield games! I will have to at some point, but that will be the only reason why!

Right, video. This song, in various versions has been around for over 20 years now, with a new version coming out each time England get to this, or the European Championships. No, I dont care if the hurt continues or not, I suspect it will, mind.

Disability training required!

Firstly, a quick reminder for the newer folk around here, and numbers do seem to have exploded viewing this, so…I’m on holiday now, in Seattle. What this means for those lucky people who know to read both blogs, there’s no point, they just get copy and paste treatment, as most would want to know the same things, and besides, I dont have the time to write 2! So… Yes, I know, its been a while, but more on that in a moment!

Strictly, the holiday made an early start on Thursday, as I went into Am Dram mode again in Cookridge, with a couple of work friends. I would spend time praising the performance to the hilt, and telling you to go see it, but there were only 3 shows, its finished by now, but…It was really good, I must say, as was the meal before that, both the food, and the company.

I was going to post something on Friday re the reduction of stakes on the ghastly machines in betting shops nowadays, from £100, to £2, but firstly I ran out of time, having my hair done (shock horror, I’m not a natural blonde!), and then packing to come here. So it never happened. Mind, as the reduction wont kick in until 2020, I shall probably be rude about the betting industry before then!

Yesterday was just a typical US Travel day in so many ways, that I’ll only pass on the interesting details. Yes, Manchester Airport redeemed themselves this time, though they get one more chance to mess up yet. As does Seattle, where a lovely young lady not only helped me through, and got my baggage for me, she actually ran me over to where the hotel courtesy shuttles pick up, and I’m sure thats not in their job description. But the middle one… No, it wasnt bad, just the opposite in fact, really good service, but…

Every other airport I’ve seen in the US (even before I needed this ‘old crock’ service) has either had a separate line for wheelchair passengers, or mingled them into the crew column, or a mix of both. Ah, but this is Vegas, so…Its not the biggest International sector, I suspect it doesnt need it. So there is a crew column, but access passengers…no! Seems we, regardless of nationality go into the US there, in the US citizen queue. So yes, lol, dont tell Trump, but I’m a US citizen, of sorts! Not really, but yes, it was amusing.

Today has been relatively quiet, as I gave the body chance to recover in advance with planning. In truth, with the warmth here, less needed, but anyway… Just to say, for those who care, I now have an active US cell phone again, until next Sunday, so if you wish to talk, for any reason, just ask for number. If I dont know you of sorts, tell me why you want to talk to me, OK? Not saying I wont give it, but just curious, thats all. Only works for 8 days anyway!

OK, there has to be a down point, doesnt there? Yes, there is one, though hopefully the Mariners will sort it out, they have been emailed already. The game was great, the only snag being that the seat was up more than a few stairs, which didnt help, but I got there eventually, with only minimal soreness. No reason they should have known, I’m not obviously disabled (brace is under top/skirt, and fact not mentioned), so how would the poor guy picking my seat know? I did come down after 7.5 innings, I needed to go ‘somewhere’, and never went back up. Actually found a more comfortable seat for the other 3.5 innings, as it went to overtime. Then, after Seattle had won…

Given I was sore, and given there was a sign for a disabled elevator nearby, I decided to use that to get downstairs, rather than struggling down a large number of stairs, in a large crowd of people. Unfortunately, the lady in the elevator had either failed her disability training, had never been given any, or just didnt think it applied to anyone in less than a wheelchair! So when I, and another lady who said she had walking difficulties got into the lift, she bluntly told us that the lift wasnt meant for ‘people like you’, and pointing at a couple of mothers, with buggies behind us, said, “Its meant for them!”. I have no objection to them using it, but it does say its a disability elevator, so… Complaint email has been sent to the Mariners accordingly! Do I expect anything more than platitudes from them? Probably not! But put it this way, not that they will care, but I had planned a second game at some point Friday, or Saturday, but certainly wont be bothering now! I know, whats 1 customer to them, but all the same…

Fine, video time. I couldnt think of a song that really fitted in with all this, so just made a random choice of an under rated Soft Cell song.
