On New Years Day (plus one)

Today, strictly one day late, due to New Years Day falling on a Sunday, is one of the great Los Angeles (well, Pasadena) traditions, the Rose Bowl parade, and college football game.

I know, I know, but the great beast that is the NFL takes priority on a Sunday, so this has had to wait until today. Maybe one day I’ll get to see the parade live, or even visit the Rose Bowl, but the former wont be this year, and the latter, in terms of going to a game, no time soon, I suspect? I might see the Stadium later this year, but it wont be one of the priority places to visit, so…? I have no idea how practical that is by public transit, anyway?

Mind, compared to what travel must have been like for Michigan, for the first ever game, in 1902, its probably a whole lot easier nowadays. I assume 2 or 3 days by train, just to get out to California, and the same again, to go back afterwards. Now you could do the flight in a matter of hours! The current famous Rose Bowl wasnt apparently used until 1923 (Thanks, Wikipedia), but only once since then, in 1942, has it not happened there. Yes, that pesky WW2 forced it East for one year!

By tradition nowadays, its the champion of the Big 10, against the champion of the Pac 10, but it doesnt always happen. Commercialization, and nowadays the College Championships get in the way of that. So this year, we do have the Big 10 champions, Penn State, playing USC who didnt win the Pac 10, but beat the champions of that conference! They were in the College Championships, but anyway… I like many others suspect Penn State should have been among the 4 in that championship too!

Oh, the NFL? Well, Buffalo were as awful this season as I expected them to be, as were the Los Angeles Rams. Now seems there will be a second team in LA next year, the Chargers seem to be moving up the coast to join them. Not that they will improve the quality of the teams in the city, but anyway… Thankfully, from a Harlow point of view, the Kansas City Chiefs made the playoffs, and in fact, won their division in the end. More due to the Raiders having major injury issues, but all the same… its something!

OK, video time. A very apt piece of U2!

The most incredible present ever

Well, yes, today officially was the big day, I hit 57. Unless you have done so elsewhere, feel free to leave greetings. OK, lurkers, I know you wont, but no harm in asking.

But in all truth, because of the way things work out with life, it was actually Saturday that proved to be the magical day this weekend. It wasnt in my plans to have Saturday off, but it suited work, due to the Cheltenham Festival and all that, but it made for a nice change.

And due to Nicole being elsewhere this evening, we took that chance to have my birthday celebration meal a couple of days early. And I took the chance to wear a strapless, green dress, most suitable for this weekend, given the cricket yesterday (not too much about that please), and the fact that its St Patricks Day tomorrow. Yes, I know its a silly thing, but I do love wearing a strapless dress nowadays, even if I’m not giving a big show of cleavage in doing so.

So fine, just after 6.30, we get back home, and I have an email from a friend, asking me for some personal details, for ‘something’. Given I know him well, I passed them on, hey, it was only my name as on my passport, nothing more anyway. He had mentioned leaving messages on Facebook, and Yahoo messenger as well, so I went off to those, to let him know the deed was done. He was still on Yahoo, so we started chatting. All I was told at this point was that something would be waiting for me in LA.

No, not a mad scientist who was literally going to turn me into Jean Harlow lol! Though given its Hollywood, there may well be one!

So fine, after a little while, the news came out, and for those who havent read the follow up comment on the last blog, its basically this. I am going to that party in Hollywood, and I dont have to concern myself about the cost, as the ticket, and dinner have been paid for, and given to me as the most wonderful present by James (yes, he was the one I was talking to), and Kate (who I soon ended up talking to as well). Words cannot describe how lovely a gesture this is, and now all I’ve got to decide is which dress I’m wearing!

Today has been calmer, got some nice stuff designed to make me even more beautiful from the folk here this morning as well, though I’m not sure how much of a miracle me looking stunning would take! But anyway…should look better after tomorrow, as I have a massage, and facial booked for the afternoon.

Oh, the cricket. Ireland did well, won more games than England in fact, but didnt make the quarter finals. But even so, its been a great few weeks, watching them down under. Hopefully at some point this summer, I’ll get to see them in the flesh, though job finding, and schedules may play a part in seeing how much, and when.

The video, from a time when U2 took themselves less seriously. And it sums up perfectly the gift received, from two truly wonderful friends, on Saturday evening. Just under 5 weeks from now, ‘Jean’ will go to the ball!

The Sweetest thing?

As any regular reader will know, I commute to work, using a, err, wonderful train company called Trans Pennine Express. Yes, equally any regular will know, that comment is very tongue in cheek, they could drive a saint to tears much of the time.

Lets just say that their services punctuality leaves a lot to be desired (they put a message on the train speaker saying that if you see anything suspicious, to let them know. If I ever see one of their trains run on time, I’ll report it as suspcious) to put it mildly, the fares are among the highest in the country, and due to having insufficient carriages for need, tend to be overcrowded most of the day.

Ironic story of the last few days, at the beginning of 2013, our fares went up slightly more than normal, to pay for the extra rolling stock that they would be providing, so we didnt feel like sardines most of the time when travelling with them. This week, it was announced that they arent arriving, due to a falling out with the leasing company! But I dont think our fares will be going down now, somehow!…rolls eyes!

But no, this isnt going to be a one sided insult of said train company, I’m about to say something nice about them too!

So when you’ve picked yourself up off the floor…

It seems I’m not the only one celebrating a birthday this month (16th, if you care?), Trans Pennine Express are 10 this month. And those of us long suffering customers who get emails, and the like from them, got an offer. If you sent a request, and were amongst the first 10,000 to do so, you could get £10 off an advance fare. Now fine, for most commuters, its not what we need to buy, but…I’m going to Jersey in May, and have to get myself to Manchester Airport. So by booking now, I got the single fare, first class, for £5! Less than the standard class advance ticket would normally cost!

So fine, I’ve paid for it now, not in May, just before I go (when it probably would still have been £15 first class), but I’ve got a bargain, care of the train company that drives me crazy. So, just once in a while, they do the sweetest thing. Mind, that train will probably run late, but…

The video. Well, Bono has gained a bit of a reputation for being too forthright for his own good. This video, just the opposite, very tongue in cheek. A few cameos in it too, though whether many will spot them now?

A beautiful day

Mainly related to the fact that its been my one day off, in an eleven day period stretching from last Wednesday, until this Saturday, this is it! But yes, it has been a beautiful day weather wise, even if I havent had any real time to enjoy it. Trying to catch up on things, including my blogs, as you may well have noticed!

Right, lets start with the depressing stuff, what I still havent managed to achieve, despite these few hours of freedom. I havent got my nails done, which is only annoying in the sense that 3 nails have snapped off, taking the gel with them. Only blessing, given they are shimmering silver nowadays, its not as obvious as they would be if pink, or red, or a colour like that. But given I cant get them done on a Sunday, it will now be next Tuesday, but appointment is now booked at least. Nor have I got my hair coloured or cut, which is needed, but just at the moment, unless I can achieve miracles (or forego most of next Tuesday), I have no idea when I can get it done. The other thing I know isnt done, is to get the 2 ebooks ready for publishing, though they are now ready to go, even got the covers to go up too. 🙂 Hopefully I can dig into that on Sunday (though no idea when I can find the time) and get them through the checker thing at Smashwords, and get them posted up. But please, dont quote me on a date for that, all the same.

What I have got done, among many things, is plenty of reading, which hopefully opens up some time for next week, even more so if I can get through a few more tonight, fingers crossed. I’ve also sent the 2 shorts off to Simon tonight, so hopefully they should get posted up to the Archive at the weekend, the first stuff I will have posted there in quite a while, due to those blessed time issues! Probably the last for quite a while too!

Oh, and I’ve written a blog, just for you. But yes, the weather forecast tonight, as provided by U2, is

Next one, Sunday…hopefully!
