Calling occupants of interleague baseball teams

Apologies for the brevity tonight, but I’m running late, havent got a really good second blog subject, so this will need to do.

Every year up to this one, there has been a big trade deadline date in the MLB at end of July, but then until the end of August there was a secondary way of trading players, but not this year, its done now. I’m sure that in the next few days, one of the big teams is going to lose a major player, will not be able to trade for a replacement, and all hell will break out, especially if its the Yankees, lol. As long as its not the Dodgers, lol…

Of course they can still bring in free agents (unlikely to be many major pieces at this time of year), or players from their lesser quality teams. Of course it will be interested to see how this plays out, as I think that will show whether its a one year wonder, or not. I think the theory was that it might boost the market, but seems to have had the opposite effect, due to more teams being in contention, so I suspect we will be back to 2 trade dates next season, somehow, lol. But yes, if events at the end of July have a critical effect on events at end of October, well…?

Oh, and mentioning crazy end of year dates, the main part of the US golf year ends tonight! So they can get the playoffs out the way before the NFL season starts, seriously? Mind, the 2020 season starts in September, so…

Right, video time. The song is obvious, but its a single length version of the Klaatu version, as opposed to the long length Carpenters version!

Coming back for more

In recent years, this is the point where American Football goes to sleep for about 6 months, until this year at least. Over the years, most famously of course in 1960, when the AFL came along, there have been a few challenges to the NFL, which actually marks its official centenary season later this year. Most have fallen by the way side, though indoor arena football seems to stagger on at least. Whether the 2 new tigers to the fold do any better, we will have to wait and see.

(Side note, 2 current teams, now the Arizona Cardinals, and the Chicago Bears played in that first season, though they were then the Chicago Cardinals, and the Decatur Staleys. Green Bay Packers actually formed in 1919, but didnt officially play in the NFL until 1921.

The XFL, which will restart next year, rose early this century, lived briefly, then crashed in a hail of financial issues. Despite that, they are planning to try and start again next year, though given there has already been 1 interim false start in the past, dont hold your breath.

Next week though, the AAF, or Alliance of American Football gets under way. 8 teams, of which 2 are in cities that also have NFL franchises. Another, San Diego did until recently. Yes, there are gimmicks, if you want to read them all, try

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alliance_of_American_Football

for details. Will it succeed in the long term, or crash like so many other leagues have done, who knows? Will it have a rival next year, and of so, can both possibly survive, clearly, watch for details!

I assume it wont be great quality, but for those who need their fix of American Football, it helps, I guess?

OK, video time. I must admit, before the You Tube search, I only knew this artist for one song, and one song only, Convoy. Seems his career in the US at least has been a bit bigger than that. And yes, I’d love the outfit the female backing singers are wearing, just saying…

Just looking at New England?

My dear friend Kate is either going to love me for this, hate me for this (hopefully when I jinx them), or somewhere in between?

Tonight sees the 53rd running of the Superbowl, in Atlanta. I wonder if the executives who put together the planning for the first one, all those years ago would ever have imagined what it would all lead to. Back in those days, the NFL, and the new rival, the AFL were hardly best of buddies, but eventually they got together, and the rest is history.

Love them, hate them (most people do one or other), or be diplomatic about your feelings about them (as I try to do, see above, she’s a big fan), there’s one team that has been one team who have been in about half the games in this century. Yes, the New England Patriots! What they have done is pretty incredible, like them, or otherwise, and however much ‘assistance’ you might think they’ve had over the years.

This year, amusingly for us, they are playing the team you could probably call Hollywood’s team, the Los Angeles Rams, so guess who I’m rooting for? Yes, as I said to another friend, a Rams cheerleader outfit might be fun, other than the fact I’m 60, and wont actually see the game live, as it will be nearly midnight before it starts over here (3.40 pm, LA time), but fine, if someone wants to get me one…?

Oh, and the Patriots robbed me of the perfect Harlow Superbowl when they beat them in the AFC Championship, lol.

So yes, I’d love to see the Rams win tonight, but at least I have the consolation that if they dont, Kate will be happy, at least. Oh, and there’s a fair chance I’ll be in New England when the next season is in its early stages. Might be Oklahoma, but if you asked me to bet, my money is on the former.

OK, video time. My other blog was a song people didnt know was a cover. More people did know the Kirsty McColl version was a cover version, but the original is rarely heard. This is actually a composite, as Bragg includes the verse added just for Kirsty here.

The hypocrisy in the US

Right, I’ll make the offer loud and clear, and see if anyone will take me up on it. I am off work this week, and I hereby pledge to fill the usual blog spaces for you. Given that I’m not planning on anything more than a relaxing week until Friday (more on that Thursday) other than treatments, I’ve got the time to do more blogs. But if you want them to appear, I need some suitable subject matter, thats all. No UK/Europe politics, but other than that…? No, I dont expect to hear from anyone, but I can hope. stephmajor8@hotmail.com for emails will be fine, if you dont want to join on here.

I’m sure many will remember the fuss, and furore that Trump, and his friends made when NFL players took a knee for the US National Anthem? Thats right, all the fuss about being disrespectful to veteran soldiers, and all that.

Well, according to a group of Trump worshipping men from Kentucky, thats only an issue if the veterans are white, seemingly. I’m not going to tell the whole story, because lets face it, its only just happened in Washington, and its been over the news all over the weekend. Well, maybe Fox News covered it up, but otherwise…?

Thankfully, apart from a few White Supremacists, and their kin, especially from Kentucky, the whole event has been met with horror from others. So much so that the school has locked, or deleted all its social media outlets, the reaction was so bad. Sadly, the only (unsurprising, I guess?) reaction from the family of the ghastly youth who threatened the Native American Vietnam veteran was to defend what he did. Apparently, one of the senior staff at the school has called for Kentucky to secede from the union, and was doing that before this social media disaster, its just come out now, because the school has come under investigation!

Given Kentucky is one of the poorest, most impoverished states in the US, I have no idea how they think they would survive for long if they did secede! But anyway…

Part of the issue does indeed lay with Trump, and his friends, and their racist attitudes. The snag is, others have seen this, and think they can get away with it too. The difference is, he has money, and doesnt care how hated he is. Most in Kentucky have barely 2 dollar coins to rub together, let alone anything more. And fine, that corner of the country has a reputation for being racist, homophobic, and a few other awful things too. Might be why, beyond Atlanta Airport, I’ve avoided that corner of the South in all my US travels.

I’d love to think these young men will be dealt with properly, but given that another from that school has issues with a rape case, I’m not going to hold my breath on that. I’m also going to say that though Kentucky is the culprit this time around, its not the only state in that corner of the world with these issues that need looking into.

Maybe they need to change those MAGA caps to MARA, for that corner of the world at least. R for racist, naturally.

OK, video time. Native American related songs, well… This song originally is nearly as old as me, though this version is far more recent than that!

Dont stop! Go, go, go!

Any UK people reading this will know what has inspired the blog title, its the Sky Sports promotional video for the start of the Premier League season tomorrow evening. Yes, having barely seemed to have been away, probably even more so because of the World Cup, football (or for US readers, soccer) is back! In truth, strictly for the lower leagues it started last week, but who worries about minor facts like that? 😛

So yes, as from Saturday (Yes, Huddersfield have a home, 3.00 kick off this Saturday), I will again be trying to beat the rush from the ground after work. Unfortunately, because I finish at 4.00, which gets me back into Huddersfield just about the same time as the football fans are hitting town, post game, and traffic chaos in town, especially as the ‘wonderful’ First Buses seem to vanish off the road at the same time…rolls eyes…!

Yes, my sole interest in football, apart from trying to win a fortune in Sky Sports silly games (free, or I wouldnt bother), is finding out when Huddersfield are at home, to try and avoid the idiots! Mind, if you’d told me a year ago that they would still be in Premier League, me, and most other people would have laughed at you. But a 16th place finish (out of 20, 17 stay up) and here we go again! No, these football contests, just lots of wild guesses, but quarter of a million (or more), for fluking 6 correct scores, who knows? Never going to happen, but guessing is no worse than knowledge, lets face it. Would solve numerous issues for me, for sure!

Oh, and for my US readers, their football (NFL) season (albeit the warm up games) start tonight. Well, there was 1 game last weekend, but for 30 teams… I now gather all teams have gone over to mobile ticketing only, so thats my chance of going to a game over, lol. Not that I was likely to, at those prices, but anyway… Just thought I’d better acknowledge it, thats all.

Right, video time. For my younger readers, who have no idea what this is, its a 78 rpm record. They disappeared when I was a youngster, but I do remember them. Unlike vinyl records, they broke easily! Ah, the memories…and for those in UK, this is the full version of the Sky Sports ad song

Too late for paper?

Dont get me wrong, I know I’m old, and old fashioned to match, but a few days ago I realized just how out of touch with modern life that I am.

You know how it is with these sports teams you follow (I refuse to say support, I cant get that enthusiastic, lol), they send you tons of emails re tickets for games and stuff, because they dont really notice that you’re several thousand (or more) miles from the stadium, and the likelihood of you ever buying a ticket of any kind, more than once in a blue moon, you get my drift?

Well, this week, given that the new NFL season isnt a million miles away, I got an email from the Buffalo Bills about tickets for the games this season. No, not one begging me to buy tickets for the games for once, though I’ve had plenty, in truth. But no, as far as I know, no plans, or intentions to go to one, especially as the fans seem to be a pretty homophobic bunch, judging by forums, and social media at least.

You know that up to now, a lot of people print off their tickets from their computers in a document form, you show them at the game, and they let you in? I know I’ve done so in the past, on a few occasions, most recently for the Mariners games in May, in Seattle. Anyway, Buffalo wrote to say that these will no longer be accepted, that ticket entry will now only be via your smart phone! Ah well, I wasnt likely to go to a game before, but certainly wont be now!

I know, people buy their travel tickets on their phones, make payments by contactless cards, and everything else, but for those of us old enough not to care for these things, to take away our chance to go, sad day. Oh fine, Bills, I’ll go and support a team that takes good old paper tickets, not that they’ll notice the difference lol!

Maybe I should start an ‘I dont want to own a Smart Phone’ group on Social Media, and hopefully I wouldnt be the only member!

Right, video time. The only one that came to mind when thinking of Paper, and Late, was this one. Not Genesis’s best moment, but hey, its fun!

We dont need another hero!

Simply because the Patriots seem to have found one, and he’s not any of the big name players you would ever have heard of. Its fair to say that there may be other NFL players who do similar things in the off season, but he’s the first one I’ve heard of, and yes, I hope that he gets a well deserved Superbowl medal tonight. Because in truth, he deserves one more than Brady, Gronkowski, Belichick and co probably do. Thats not to say they dont deserve one, just that this guy has really earned his, if they win tonight, and not for what he’s done on the football pitch.

Yes, its Superbowl tonight. For my US readers, its taking place at a sane hour, and you get to watch it. Me, it starts at 11.30 pm, and I have to be in work tomorrow, so its not going to happen! Hopefully I can catch the highlights tomorrow, or Tuesday, even if I will know the score by then.

The article?

http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/268116/from-making-11-an-hour-to-super-bowl-behind-the-surreal-year-for-patriots-bernard-reedy

I know, never heard of him, and lets face it, he’s only been with Patriots for about 3 months, on and off. But he’s on today, on the biggest night of the season, and thats the main thing. As I say, this piece isnt about the big names taking part in the game, though they will draw far more attention today, its about this lesser known guy, and what he does when he’s not playing football. Please note, he stayed in Tampa when the rest of the team escaped the hurricane last year, just so he could help!

There is one thing, love them, or hate them, that the Patriots have always been shrewd about, and thats picking up players rejected by other teams. Will Reedy prove to be one of those, who knows? As he says, regardless, give it a couple of weeks off, and he’s going back to his other job, regardless.

Will this make me a Patriots fan, I hear you ask? For tonight, definitely. Beyond that, who knows? Put it this way, Kate wouldnt have to work too hard at present for that to happen. I know, I’ve supported Buffalo for decades, but in truth, I’ve seen so much ghastly racist, and white supremacist stuff posted on their fan boards this season to feel comfortable about being involved with them any more. Logical options for me would be one of the Los Angeles teams, or Kansas City, but fine, a feelgood story like this, then well…?

But yes, definitely for tonight, go Patriots, if only for Bernard Reedy! Of course, if Kate wants to ‘convince’ me to make it more long term, I’m more amenable at present than ever before, just saying… 😉 Mentioning Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma could work. 😉 A joke that she might get, but others wouldnt, just saying…

You might have worked out the video from the title, if you havent, why not? This is quite a stunning live performance from 2009 though, not the original video. Yes, I think Clara might have enjoyed some of those outfits lol!
