Always the bridesmaid?

In truth, in over 59 years, for whatever reason, I havent been to that many weddings in my life. Not quite sure of numbers, but a dozen, or less, quite likely. And those I have been to, always as a guest, and nothing more. Never been a bride, cant even remember getting to be a bride on stage, even! Yes, thats right, never been a bridesmaid either! Until now! Well, not quite now, but in 3 weeks, and 2 days time, yes, I will be. My current concern is more about not messing things up, given there will be very limited opportunities for a rehearsal, given I will only arrive in town about 2 days before the big event! I know, all will be fine, but this is me…!

I’m not saying that at 59 years, and 6 months (to the day), that I will be the oldest first time bridesmaid ever, but I suspect I’d be near the top of that list! Before you ask, yes, I’m definitely looking forward to it, and honored to have been asked, as I’d given up on it ever happening by now. No, I dont expect to ever make the oldest first time bride list, I might add! Maybe, who knows, but breath wont be held lol!

To be honest, currently at least, my biggest concern about it all, is my back! Thankfully the back brace corset does seem to be capable of allowing me to stand still for more than a couple of minutes at present, but how long that really will work for, I have no idea. And no, I dont want to be a bridesmaid in a wheelchair lol! I’m sure I wouldnt be the first, but yes, I’d rather be able to pass on that, all the same, given I can walk, and stand, at the moment at least.

But yes, me, the blushing bridesmaid. Never thought it would happen, but really looking forward to it now. Now, if I can catch the bouquet lol…?

The video, very apt for a wedding. I cant believe I havent used this here before, but seemingly not, so…

Going to the chapel, but not me being married!

Actually, in truth, I have no idea if it will be chapel, church, or registry office (or whatever the US equivalent is?), but it looks like I’m going to a wedding this year. And yes, as you might have guessed from one comment, it will be in the US, definitely a first. No, not me, not yet at least, and unless anyone is crazy, probably not me, ever! But who knows, there might be someone that fancies a challenge, or wants to turn me into a Stepford type wife (which I’d enjoy far too much!), but logic says not!

To be fair, even when I saw the announcement on Facebook, and congratulated her accordingly, I wasnt expecting to be invited to the wedding. Lets face it, I’m a few thousand miles from New York State, and we’ve never actually met yet, though its fair to say like I feel I have known Stacie for years. In a sense, I have, but in real life, not yet!

So when it gets mentioned in messages that she wanted to know when I would be in her corner of the US later this year, and that she wants me to be at the wedding, well, I was honored, flattered, but fine, amazed. Admittedly, as it stands, given I’m flying in 1 Saturday, flying out the next one, its not going to work like that. A midweek wedding might suit me, but not going to suit anyone else, lets face it. So I might have to beg a holiday extension at work, but I can live with that!

Finding a suitable dress, hmm? I have a few that would more than do, but a new one, doubtful, but we will see. Where’s that Harlow type gown when I need it lol? Couldnt afford it, even if I found one! But if anyone is offering …? No, I might need a slightly larger size than Jean would have done!

I’ll be honest, if she cant make those dates I’m in the area, for whatever reason, and that does seem a rushed arrangement to me, I’ll be doing everything possible to get there, whenever it happens. Who knows, I might catch the bouquet, when she throws it, and then…No, I dont think any man, or woman is that crazy regardless!

So Stacie, thank you, invite accepted, whenever it actually happens!

The video, big clue in the blog title! I assumed that 25 years after the hit, this might not be a good idea, going for a live version, but no concerns on that front!

To look for America

Yes, thats what I’ll be doing on Saturday, looking out for America. Snag is, at 35,000 feet, there arent too many signs to say that you’re entering US airspace lol! I know, they have that map thing on the planes, but lets face it, telling exactly when you cross into the US isnt quite as easy as that. I will know, clouds permitting when we reach Canada though lol. I’ll know when I actually land on US soil though, at New York, unless the plane has the most unique landing system known! Funnily enough, it will be a moment of deja vu, as the first time I left US soil, it was from JFK, and that was 25 years ago. And do you know, I havent been back there since, before Saturday. And of course, one week later, it will again be the last piece of US soil seen by me for a while. Who knows, I might even get back there again, in less than 25 years from now! I suspect I wont be travelling like that by then anyway, given I’ll be 80 by then!

Its a funny thing though, if my ancestors, just over 100 years ago had gone west from Ireland, instead of east, well, I wonder where I’d be now? Maybe I’d be holidaying regularly in England lol! Probably not, but…

Its fair to say that this year, not only am I looking for America, I’m looking for one specific person from America, and yes, its not hard for regular readers to know her name, Louise Brooks. Thats why I’m heading for Rochester on Saturday, and Kansas in September! Yes, I know, in her life sense, its the wrong way round, but anyway…I’m looking forward to it, a return to Rochester after 25 years too, though as far as I can remember, all I saw then was the route to Lake Ontario, and the lake itself, on the way out, and a motel just off the interstate on the way back. So saying its a return visit may be pushing it a bit lol!

Ah, the video, yes, as so often, the title is a giveaway. Finding an original live performance of this, no, I failed, hardly surprisingly. But this is definitely live, so…

Way Up North…

No, not to Alaska, just the Northern part of New York State a bit earlier than expected. Those who visit here from the Garden already know the tale, and if you dont, why not? But for the sake of all the other folk coming here from various places, my holiday plans for next year have swopped around. So in April, instead of heading ‘Way out West’ to Wichita, I’ll be heading ‘Way up North’ to Rochester instead.

Yes, its a tactical thing, conjured up between me and Kate, but its fair to say that once discussed, I put my foot down, and said I was swapping the 2 trips over next year. Irony is, that was the original plan, then it got changed, and now its got changed back again! At least the ghost of Louise Brooks can tell me how awful Wichita was lol! Maybe…? ūüėČ

There are a few other places around Rochester that I’m looking forward to visiting, both in town, and out of it. In town, the Kodak Eastman House is one of the obvious ones, though equally I’m hoping to track down the building Louise lived in, even if standing outside is probably as good an option as it gets. There is one other blindingly obvious place to visit, I’m sure I dont have to tell you that! I also plan to look out on Lake Ontario, as I did 25 years ago, it will be strange doing that again, but something I so want to do. As is going back to Buffalo for a day, and I do mean day, unlike that last time I was there, in the early hours of the morning.

English tourists, didnt realise it was a US Bank Holiday weekend, and we headed for Niagara! Unsurprisingly we couldnt then find a hotel room that night lol! We arrived in Buffalo about 2 in the morning, seeking coffee to try and keep us awake! The other trip (a lot nearer to town) will possibly be to see the Roc City Thunder play indoor football, yes, the American version of football. New team, but they are at home the Sunday I’m there. Its a few miles out of town, but if I can find a way, it sure would be fun!

Flight is now booked, so plans wont be changing again. Hotel will be booked shortly, just finalising options on that at present.

OK, the video is strictly about that place in the state where the city has the same name, and not about the state, but… this makes for a fun video this way. I may never be a native New Yorker, but I might live there, at least for a week, maybe more?

Err, yes, its a bit dated, and thats not even allowing for one obvious landmark that is now tragically missing of course.

The thank you speech

I’ll just keep this brief tonight, if you’ll forgive me, time is getting on, and given I fly back tomorrow night, I need to get a good nights sleep tonight. Besides which, its been a long, and wonderful week, but it might be beginning to catch up with me now. Either that, or equally possible, I’m now so stress free, and relaxed, that the brain is just switching down a bit. Might well be the latter, I havent slept this well in a while, and that seems an obvious reason why, just relaxed.

I will fill out more details after I get back, I promise, but for now…Lets face it, it will be 1 blog posting I wont have to concern myself as to the subject matter lol!

So for now, my biggest, and most grateful thanks go out to Kate, who has made a wonderful companion for the week. She has done a lot of wonderful things for me this week, and its all been so appreciated. While on the subject, I’d like to thank her AO (adored one), and Fenway the dog (before he nips my ankles for forgetting him lol) for letting Kate loose for what has been a really super week for me. Hopefully we can get together again at some point in the future, that would be great.

I also want to thank James for being a wonderful companion on Wednesday, and for taking me somewhere special. As I say, more details soon! You are a wonderful guy, it was a pleasure to meet you again, and look forward to a repeat in about 18 months time, for a bit of a longer stay.

And alright, thanks to both New England, and New York State for providing me with such wonderful places to visit.

No, I’m not going to do a blubbering Kate Winslet performance at this point, just provide the music video. I have used it before, but its just too apt not to use now.

An English sport in the US

Its amazing what you can watch on TV nowadays in terms of variety, and it also brings about ironic little moments too.

Earlier I was watching the NY Yankees beating up Chicago White Sox at baseball care of ESPN live from Yankees Stadium in New York. Hard to believe that 40 years ago, live coverage of anything from the US was quite something. Oh hell,¬†I’m showing my age again lol! I’m also getting ever more addicted to baseball, but dont worry Kate, I have no plans to support¬†‘that team from New York’ lol! Red Sox are still my second love, though Kansas might be on the move in levels of support, for obvious reasons!

But now, wait for it, I’m watching cricket live from Florida!¬†I know, shock horror, though I suspect most of the crowd are¬†ex-pats from cricket playing nations, especially the West Indies, one of the teams taking part. There might be a few Americans there, but I suspect in the vast minority.¬†Its only when you consider that about 100 years ago, one of the leading non national teams in the world was Philadelphia!¬†My, have things changed since then lol!

Ah, New York. The one US city I really have no desire to return to, far too loud and lively for quiet little me. Not even knowing that Louise Brooks lived there for a while is enough¬†to tempt me back lol! Its the one place that qualifies on that front, it has to be said. Yes, I set a story revolving around a ‘character’ that could be said to be based on her there, but Wikipedia is a wonderful thing for such matters. The everlasting memory I will always have of New York though, is a sad one. Yes, 25 years ago, I went up (with my partner) to the observation deck on¬†one of the World Trade Center buildings. 14 years later, I saw that¬†tower crash to the ground, an image that will probably live with me as long as I’m on this planet.

New York State, a whole different matter, will be going back there in April 2013 (Rochester), and a year later (Albany) as well. I plan next year to visit Buffalo as well, but go nowhere near NYC.

The video, well, this just seemed rather apt to me tonight, everything considered. If US Immigration want to make me a legal alien…that gives away the song surely?

Cold is relative

Depends on where you live I guess?

You get us British wimps complaining how cold it is when it hits the mid twenties over here, on the other hand, there are parts of the US and Canada who would think that positively tropical at present.¬† I’ve just taken a quick look, and currently Boston is in singles figures (just), and Buffalo barely breaking into positive numbers. Fairbanks, where I have one Facebook contact is currently -45, but it is still night time there, but even so…! I suspect thats pretty much one of the coldest places around though? Nome, a place close to my heart is at 1, quite warm for this time of year lol!

The thing is, I suspect that public transport doesnt collapse around New York State, New England, Toronto etc despite these temperatures, whereas 3 grains of snow over here, and everything will collapse totally! Thankfully its only frost so far, so it hasnt happened yet, but give it time, and I’m sure it will. Knowing my luck it will be the week after next when I’m off! I would like to do some day trips beyond the one to get my back and knees sorted out, to some degree at least, but…

I suppose its what you get used to? If I lived, and worked in, and around that North East sector I mentioned, the cold probably wouldnt bother me as much, if at all,¬†unlike it does over here? Me, I just tend to get on with it anyway, but public transport seems unable to do so, and when you’re reliant on it as I am… But yes, I’d still love to chance to live and work in those chilly areas, given the chance. Seattle might be better, but… Hey, I’d probably go and work in Anchorage if given the opportunity lol! Fairbanks, hmm… ūüėČ

Its something you get used to, or at least I assume you do, maybe James, Kate and others will tell me differently? Mind, a well insulated silver body suit might make for a good option for me, lol!

Alright, some music which seems applicable at the moment, though doing it along I-90 might be complex all the same! I tossed up several versions of this, but this seemed the most apt somehow
