Just looking at New England?

My dear friend Kate is either going to love me for this, hate me for this (hopefully when I jinx them), or somewhere in between?

Tonight sees the 53rd running of the Superbowl, in Atlanta. I wonder if the executives who put together the planning for the first one, all those years ago would ever have imagined what it would all lead to. Back in those days, the NFL, and the new rival, the AFL were hardly best of buddies, but eventually they got together, and the rest is history.

Love them, hate them (most people do one or other), or be diplomatic about your feelings about them (as I try to do, see above, she’s a big fan), there’s one team that has been one team who have been in about half the games in this century. Yes, the New England Patriots! What they have done is pretty incredible, like them, or otherwise, and however much ‘assistance’ you might think they’ve had over the years.

This year, amusingly for us, they are playing the team you could probably call Hollywood’s team, the Los Angeles Rams, so guess who I’m rooting for? Yes, as I said to another friend, a Rams cheerleader outfit might be fun, other than the fact I’m 60, and wont actually see the game live, as it will be nearly midnight before it starts over here (3.40 pm, LA time), but fine, if someone wants to get me one…?

Oh, and the Patriots robbed me of the perfect Harlow Superbowl when they beat them in the AFC Championship, lol.

So yes, I’d love to see the Rams win tonight, but at least I have the consolation that if they dont, Kate will be happy, at least. Oh, and there’s a fair chance I’ll be in New England when the next season is in its early stages. Might be Oklahoma, but if you asked me to bet, my money is on the former.

OK, video time. My other blog was a song people didnt know was a cover. More people did know the Kirsty McColl version was a cover version, but the original is rarely heard. This is actually a composite, as Bragg includes the verse added just for Kirsty here.

Sudden death with Buffalo

No, dont worry, its nothing serious thats happened, just the opposite in fact. But I had to do something to fit in with the video lol!

Yes, within the next hour or so, all the American Football left this season will be sudden death, knock out stuff. As I write this, the last ‘normal’ Bowls are being played, the last NFL season games were played yesterday, so after that…

Firstly, tonight, we get the 2 college football ‘semi finals’ for want of a better word, where Georgia take on Oklahoma, and Clemson take on Alabama. A week later, the two winners get to meet for their Championship. The most interesting thing for me has been the multiple shots of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, to be honest. Well, except that with a little more discovery work today, I now know where, and when a certain young lady was born in Oklahoma! Yes, on 6th September 1905, a baby girl was born somewhere in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. Thats right, a baby named Clara Elaine Johnson! Tried googling for Oklahoma birth and death records, tried her name on the site, then lo, and behold… Looking at a map, she wouldnt have been a million miles from where Oklahoma University would have been! Of course, given she left Texas for LA in 1925, how long she lived there, no idea?

Ah, the title of the blog? Yes, thats the NFL bit. For over 30 years, through thick and thin, I’ve supported the Buffalo Bills. The late 80’s, and most of the 90’s were pretty good times, but other than that, no! Until yesterday, they were the team with the longest interval since previously being in the play offs, 18 years. Not now!
It wasnt hard to see them winning before I went to bed last night, and Baltimore were losing, 2 facts which meant they would be in, but there was still about a half of football to go for each. Bills won, but until nearly the end, Baltimore were clinging on for a win seemingly, then Cincinnati scored, Baltimore lost, and Buffalo were in the play offs.

Oh fine, I found out when I opened my emails this morning (one was from team, mentioning they were in play offs), which made a nice way to start 2018! They now get to play Jacksonville, who were last in the play offs in 2007, and last played a home play off game in 1999, the last time Buffalo made the play offs! No, they didnt play each other then! Oh, and I’d better mention the Los Angeles Rams, who won their division, leading to the first play off game in LA since 1994, though for much of that time, no team was in town! By coincidence, leading to another Georgia team heading to LA!

Right, video time. For those of you who read both, I used this video on the other blog recently, so you’re not seeing things. For those who dont, enjoy a classic 30’s musical! And all those girls sharing sleeping berths, shocking stuff lol! 😛

Hold on, to what we’ve got?

I guess if I was actually a movie star nowadays, like the one I took the name of, I wouldnt mind the insane salaries that they get paid nowadays. In truth, for her time, the money Harlow was getting a week was pretty crazy, even if you took the depression out of the equation. I have no idea how much Clara Johnson was making for her lesser roles, acting, dancing, and whatever, but I suspect it was enough for a decent life, if not a Hollywood, or Beverly Hills mansion!

Its been the same with music stars, I guess, though apart from a few names, most only have a short period of fame, and then the money just has to last as long as it can, assuming they havent blown it all already?

But yes, fine, this comment comes out of a sporting event over the weekend, and OK, it relates to LA, so…

To me, what some sporting people earn is just crazy money. Even the lower league soccer stars earn more in a week, than I do in a month, for just kicking a ball around. When you get to the Premier League stars, and the stars of some of the US sports, well, it just goes crazy! I know, they’re good at their jobs, but $20 million plus, a year, seriously? I know, if I was male, and good at one of these sports, but, from the outside?

After this weekend, the NFL finally got round to the first coach sacking of the season, Jeff Fisher, at the LA Rams. The crazy thing, he’s only just been given an extension to his contract, so thats about $8 million he’s made, for about a fortnight of work! But the NFL is so loaded with money that even though I’m sure the owner will hate writing that money off, its an insignificant amount, in a billion dollar business! I know, football especially is a dangerous sport, careers are short, but…? Mind, the basketball, and baseball players earn equally insane amounts, but at least they work for a larger portion of the year to earn it!

But fine, the thing that amused me the most about an article on the CBS webpage on this, and the possible dismissal of the General Manager as well in the near future, was the talk of a woman in one of these roles, though I’m pretty sure they mean GM, not Coach! They then proceeded to give a list of 10 suitable names for the latter role, not one of them a woman! I know, I’m hopelessly not qualified, but if (seemingly when) it comes up, I’d be tempted to apply, just to shake up the old boys network. As I say, I wont get it, not qualified, no great experience, but…

Would any woman really stand a chance for a role like that, even if they were perfect for the job, and did apply? Hmm?

Yes, I’ll go back to dreaming of being offered a small theater, or movie part, and leave it at that, I guess! 😉

Video time. What the Rams didnt do in the title, and some would say, what they are now living on.

It never rains in Southern California!

It pours, man, it pours! Yes, big clue to the video there!

So yes, long before I got to LA for the first time, I’d read plenty about the drought situation out there. And to be fair, those first 10 days, in April 2015, not a drop of rain did I see! Not that I was complaining, but…

Equally, during the 4 weeks I was out there last October, it only rained once! But as the song suggests, on that one occasion, it really rained! Mind, the thing I remember about it more, was the messages coming over the TV from some meteorological station nearby, with flood warnings for some of the valleys north of the city. Yes, I saw some of the pictures, in the few days after, really was something. But yes, that was one day, for about 4 hours or so, and that was it!

So therefore it amused me greatly on Sunday, when Sky Sports went over to live coverage of the Rams game, and the rain was pouring down! Yes, I’m sure when they decided to finally give Jared Goff a start at quarterback, they thought he’d have a nice warm, dry day in LA, and that happened. I’m not saying he would have been great, even in good weather, but that was not the way he, or they would have wanted his career to start. Yes, it was that bad! In truth, the whole game was pretty awful, neither offense seemed capable of doing much, and how the Dolphins keep winning, no idea?

But yes, in his case, it never rains in Southern California, until the one time you dont want it to! Oh, but fine, yes, I hope they get some more rain this winter, because they sure need it in that area. Me, next May, I’d rather pass on it, the way it rains when it does, but I’ll also pass on earthquakes, pretty please! Sadly, another quite big one off Japan recently, I just hope they arent saving the big California one for me!

Oh fine, if you havent worked out the video by now, I give up!

A Californian in England!

As opposed to an Englishman in New York! Yes, I was contemplating a song of that title (possibly not the obvious one?), but suspect I might find that useful in a couple of weeks time lol!

In truth, this hasnt been a great weekend for Los Angeles sport. My dear Dodgers finally succumbed to the Cubs yesterday in the Championship series in the baseball, though in truth, its probably as good as they were, the Cubs seem to be the exceptional team this year, so I suspect that 108 years of hurt might end shortly, though Cleveland might end a 68 year blank period, who knows? Lets face it, they’ve won the NBA, the AHL, so…?

But yes, the amusing thing for me, Los Angeles sport wise, was happening a lot closer to me. This afternoon, my time, which was 6.30 am back home in California, the Rams played a home game in London! Yes, crazy, they move to get a bigger audience, then play a home game in London! Ah well…

Yes, 10-0 up, I had hopes for them, but no, that was it, they lost 17-10! As I say, a bad weekend for LA teams (though the Kings won in the NHL, I’d better add), but hopefully things will get better.

But fine, this old lady was wondering if there were any rich (optional, but if you can fly to London for a game…?), single people in London looking for an English partner to whisk back to LA? Or a submissive, just maybe? No, thought not, but no harm in asking lol?

Funnily enough, this time last year, I was an Englishwoman enjoying her last few days in LA!

Right, video time. I guess its fair to say I need a man, or a woman to do this to me! Yes, much under rated group, go check out some of their other stuff on You Tube, or elsewhere!

Lets get physical!

Yes, you know summer is nearly over, when the start of the NFL season is fast approaching. Yes, the season proper starts on Thursday evening (Early Friday morning here in the UK), and thats a pretty good clue that Autumn/Fall is beginning to draw near. Yes, I know, different titles each side of the pond, and given where most of my readers are lol.

I’ll be honest with you, anyone looking for shrewd advice on who are going to be good, who are going to be bad this season, not a clue. The AFC seems a total mess, as no one seemingly knows how good the Denver QB is going to be, and New England will be without Brady for 4 weeks, so how things will play out there, not a clue. In the NFC, Minnesota may have looked a decent outsider until their QB got injured, and is out for the season. Dallas, as always will be talked up, but their QB situation is even more of a mess! But yes, you can make a case for Carolina, Seattle, Green Bay, and Arizona at least, I guess?

Of the teams I sort of follow, Kansas City might have a chance in the maelstrom that is the AFC, but Buffalo just look as big a mess as ever, and though I’d love to see them do well (30 years of support), I cant see it! Of course, the other team I guess I will keep an eye on this year, due to location, is the Los Angeles (formerly St Louis) Rams. Mind, I cant see them being any good either, but…

Yes, sort of makes it obvious if you look at the schedule, the one game I’d love to be at this season. Yes, Buffalo, in Los Angeles, simple as that! Not going to happen, not going to be on TV over here, so if someone has got piles of unwanted money, and wants to spend some on me? No, didnt think so!

Oh, and lastly, while we’re talking LA sporting action, I got one piece of great news this week. My second favorite Dodger (after Vin Scully), Clayton Kershaw is finally back in action, did a minor league game last night, so fingers crossed, he’ll be back with the Dodgers soon. Just think, this year, he might not be burnt out if we reach the playoffs, and actually perform well. Fine, he might not, but dreaming, you bet!

Lastly, the video. Clue in the blog title, you bet! And ONJ is in this, but its not the original video!

I’m going to live forever

No, not me hopefully, unless its living as a robot, anyway! To be truthful, the human me is so beaten up already, that while not saying I’m ready to die just yet, I certainly dont want to live that long, either!

One thing I’ve noticed that most North American based sports have, and which seem now, to be creeping into more sports, is the ‘Hall Of Fame’ thing. I’m not saying its a bad thing, because as a historical lover of sports, it makes people think about players whose career is over, and in many cases, whose lives are over, and remember what they done. Most are remembered for one sport, or another, though there are a few (Jim Thorpe is the obvious name that comes to mind), who were famed in more than one sport, though generally in times when perhaps the depth of talent in most sports was not as deep as it is now.

Its not that long ago, baseball had its big ceremony, and this weekend, the NFL does the same. Yes, and that does mean, the first pre season game, is on Sunday! Given that one of the teams involved is starting a Quarter Back that no one has heard of, is miles down their depth chart, and everything else, its not to be taken too seriously. To be honest, apart from the one time, many years ago, that I saw a pre season game at Wembley, live, I dont take them seriously in the slightest. I know it was the Raiders, but who they played, no idea? At this point in time, ironically, for one of my 2 favorite US sports, I still havent seen a regular season game live, in person, but one day, I hope I will.

In truth, if anyone offered me a ticket, to any game this season, it would be an easy choice to make. Oh please, I’m a Buffalo Bills fan, and they’re playing the Los Angeles Rams, in Los Angeles, so yes, no contest! In fact, we are just a week away from the first pre season game in L.A, the first in town in, well, forever! Though this one is at the Coliseum, as the new stadium wont be available for a couple of years yet.

Maybe I’ll be a L.A citizen by then? Yes, and pigs fly, lol! But oh, I wish!

The video, well, the clue is in the title, its fair to say?
