Not looking for Tom Brady?

And that title should confuse everyone, because beyond a passing mention, this blog has absolutely nothing to do with him, its a me/Kate moment.

For those who arent up on facts, Kate is definitely my biggest American friend, and is well up in top few in world, in truth. Thing is, she is definitely, and deservedly, Oklahoma State in college football, and I’m Kansas State for reasons best known only to myself. In NFL terms, she is New England Patriots, as she lives in the area, and I’m Buffalo Bills, again mainly for reasons best known only to myself. Judging by Clara Johnson’s birth area, she would probably be Oklahoma if she ever cared, but anyway…

The thing is, in US time zones at least this last weekend, our 2 colleges were playing each other on Saturday, and our 2 NFL teams were playing on Sunday. For me, both actually happened Sunday, due to time difference, but besides that…to say the teasing on both sides was mild would be to exaggerate the matter! For those who care, 2-0 to Kate, though the Bills gave them one hell of a game, for sure. We certainly didnt give the amazing Tom Brady (yes, I actually follow him on Twitter) an easy time, for sure.

OK, video time returns. Given I’ve only just used Oklahoma, I’ll go with a piece from the late, great Kirsty MacColl instead

Just looking at New England?

My dear friend Kate is either going to love me for this, hate me for this (hopefully when I jinx them), or somewhere in between?

Tonight sees the 53rd running of the Superbowl, in Atlanta. I wonder if the executives who put together the planning for the first one, all those years ago would ever have imagined what it would all lead to. Back in those days, the NFL, and the new rival, the AFL were hardly best of buddies, but eventually they got together, and the rest is history.

Love them, hate them (most people do one or other), or be diplomatic about your feelings about them (as I try to do, see above, she’s a big fan), there’s one team that has been one team who have been in about half the games in this century. Yes, the New England Patriots! What they have done is pretty incredible, like them, or otherwise, and however much ‘assistance’ you might think they’ve had over the years.

This year, amusingly for us, they are playing the team you could probably call Hollywood’s team, the Los Angeles Rams, so guess who I’m rooting for? Yes, as I said to another friend, a Rams cheerleader outfit might be fun, other than the fact I’m 60, and wont actually see the game live, as it will be nearly midnight before it starts over here (3.40 pm, LA time), but fine, if someone wants to get me one…?

Oh, and the Patriots robbed me of the perfect Harlow Superbowl when they beat them in the AFC Championship, lol.

So yes, I’d love to see the Rams win tonight, but at least I have the consolation that if they dont, Kate will be happy, at least. Oh, and there’s a fair chance I’ll be in New England when the next season is in its early stages. Might be Oklahoma, but if you asked me to bet, my money is on the former.

OK, video time. My other blog was a song people didnt know was a cover. More people did know the Kirsty McColl version was a cover version, but the original is rarely heard. This is actually a composite, as Bragg includes the verse added just for Kirsty here.

Pats in the Championship Game again

Yes, I know one dear friend who will love this blog when she sees it, given who she supports, and the fact that as a non Patriots fan, I’m writing nice things about them. Oh fine, she’s one of 2 people from Oklahoma that I care about a lot, and she was born a long time after the other one. Seemingly it was Kay Francis’s (30’s actress) birthday yesterday, and I fondly described her as the second most famous actress born in Oklahoma in 1905. That is a major exaggeration, as the one I was putting above her, was of course, Clara Johnson. And yes, Kay had the far bigger career lol!

But yes, strictly, other than a tie up to Kate, in that sense, this is all about the Patriots. They do seem to be one of those teams you either love, or hate, and generally, for me, as a Bills fan (of sorts), I’d be a hater. But fine, Kate influences me, lol! And well, they are the only way I would ever put a finger in a Superbowl ring, so… Yes, this is my finger! (Taken at Patriots Place, Foxborough, by Kate)

Anyway, to get back to serious matters, last night, they qualified for their 7th consecutive AFC Championship game. The last time they didnt? 2011, beaten by the Jets, who they had thumped in the regular season only weeks before. And thats it, ever since then…its been Patriots, and someone! Quite an incredible record. So yes, however much it might hurt me to say it, congrats, Patriots, thats quite a record.

Funnily enough, I have a connection to 3 of the stadiums being used this weekend, even if I’ve never been in any of them. Pittsburgh is the one miss, though I have been to the city, but never seen the stadium. New England, yes, been to Patriots Place, where the stadium is, as the picture shows. Philadelphia, I’ve stood across the road from, when I went to a baseball game in town. Minneapolis is the most fascinating one, because I have been in a stadium, on that site. But yes, its the now demolished one, replaced by their current building, and I was there for baseball, not football. The only other NFL stadium I’ve been in? Again, that was for baseball, and now the only one that hosts both, Oakland Coliseum! And that will be losing football in a couple of years, seemingly! Though its gained my favorite football man, the gorgeous Jon Gruden. Yes, I’m still waiting my invite from him, lol!

The video tonight, I’ve played with the title, for the blog. You know all these stupid things they say about which pop star who died young that you’d love to see in a concert, here’s mine!

Alabama, and the rest

Even earlier than the start of the NFL, the college football season got under way in the last few days. In truth, if you believe the experts (and a friend called Kris), there is only 1 team that will matter, and that is Alabama. To be fair, the way they beat Florida State yesterday, who were ranked the 3rd best team, he may well be right!

But ignoring the matters of Washington (Seattle is a city I’ve loved forever), USC and UCLA (the LA teams), or even Yale (first team seen live), who I have affection for, in the end, there is 1 conference I will follow more closely, and a couple of teams there, with special emphasis on 11/18 this year. Yes, though I have no idea why, beyond the Kansas connection, I follow Kansas State, coached by the amazing Bill Snyder. My dear friend Kate, well, not only does she support Oklahoma State, its her alma mater, so I guess she’s entitled to, lol. So yes, a Big 12 girl, me!

Oh, and I might give honorable mention to Idaho, because they play in silver and gold!

Like most sports team I follow, including the Dodgers, I follow them, rather than act as crazy fanatic, as so many people do. So yes, though I’m hoping Kansas State will have a good season, especially as there are rumors it could be Bill’s last, he is approaching 80, mind, amazing man! But if they dont, I will be sorry for him, but it wont be the end of the world. Oh fine, it would be nice if we beat Oklahoma State, but only so I can tease Kate, rather than the more likely event, judging by the rankings, that she will be teasing me!

But yes, when it comes to college champions, at the end of the season, I suspect it will be Alabama, and the rest. Still, Kris will be happy with that!

Video time. Well, yes, I was looking for something Alabama related, and found this. Seems a good choice to me!

The most incredible present ever

Well, yes, today officially was the big day, I hit 57. Unless you have done so elsewhere, feel free to leave greetings. OK, lurkers, I know you wont, but no harm in asking.

But in all truth, because of the way things work out with life, it was actually Saturday that proved to be the magical day this weekend. It wasnt in my plans to have Saturday off, but it suited work, due to the Cheltenham Festival and all that, but it made for a nice change.

And due to Nicole being elsewhere this evening, we took that chance to have my birthday celebration meal a couple of days early. And I took the chance to wear a strapless, green dress, most suitable for this weekend, given the cricket yesterday (not too much about that please), and the fact that its St Patricks Day tomorrow. Yes, I know its a silly thing, but I do love wearing a strapless dress nowadays, even if I’m not giving a big show of cleavage in doing so.

So fine, just after 6.30, we get back home, and I have an email from a friend, asking me for some personal details, for ‘something’. Given I know him well, I passed them on, hey, it was only my name as on my passport, nothing more anyway. He had mentioned leaving messages on Facebook, and Yahoo messenger as well, so I went off to those, to let him know the deed was done. He was still on Yahoo, so we started chatting. All I was told at this point was that something would be waiting for me in LA.

No, not a mad scientist who was literally going to turn me into Jean Harlow lol! Though given its Hollywood, there may well be one!

So fine, after a little while, the news came out, and for those who havent read the follow up comment on the last blog, its basically this. I am going to that party in Hollywood, and I dont have to concern myself about the cost, as the ticket, and dinner have been paid for, and given to me as the most wonderful present by James (yes, he was the one I was talking to), and Kate (who I soon ended up talking to as well). Words cannot describe how lovely a gesture this is, and now all I’ve got to decide is which dress I’m wearing!

Today has been calmer, got some nice stuff designed to make me even more beautiful from the folk here this morning as well, though I’m not sure how much of a miracle me looking stunning would take! But anyway…should look better after tomorrow, as I have a massage, and facial booked for the afternoon.

Oh, the cricket. Ireland did well, won more games than England in fact, but didnt make the quarter finals. But even so, its been a great few weeks, watching them down under. Hopefully at some point this summer, I’ll get to see them in the flesh, though job finding, and schedules may play a part in seeing how much, and when.

The video, from a time when U2 took themselves less seriously. And it sums up perfectly the gift received, from two truly wonderful friends, on Saturday evening. Just under 5 weeks from now, ‘Jean’ will go to the ball!

The adventures of Jean (not Thelma) and Louise

Though to be fair, Kate and I have absolutely no plans to end up as the pair in the film did. But given that in just over 2 weeks time, the 2 of us will get together in Kansas City, and have fun (well, as much as 2 ladies who wont see 40 again can do), the title seems apt, for a good reason.

Over the weekend, I got an email from Kate, with a few details, and more interestingly, a picture of her, after her last visit to her stylist. No, I’m not posting it, but lets just say that if Brooksie had lightened her hair, then Kate would be a pretty good match, her hair was styled in the perfect bob.

And given that after my visit to my stylist, a fortnight today, and her plans to turn my hair into Jean Harlow blonde curls, I thought where’s the harm in a play on the film title?

I have few clues as to what Jean and Louise will get up to, other than allowing both a much needed break from work. But for sure, we will have good company (well, I assume Kate feels the same way, or she wouldnt keep teaming up with me), and a good time, whatever we get up to. Will be kind of ironic mind, that when we visit Cherryvale, she will probably look more like Louise than me! And no, I have no idea if Harlow ever visited Cherryvale, but logic says she didnt. Equally, unless she visited it on a movie star tour, there is no great evidence of Brooks visiting Kansas City.

But this time around, ‘Jean’ and ‘Louise’ will visit both!

The video. Well, Harlow and Brooks never appeared in a film together, Louise’s US career was pretty much done before Harlow became a name. But, in a sense, they did work together…I’ll explain

In 1928, Louise made a film called ‘A Girl In Every Port’, a silent movie. In 1931, they remade it, as a talkie, called ‘Goldie’, and you guessed it, in the Brooks role, was a young actress named Jean Harlow! Irony is, that though both films survive, there are very few copies of either. To say the quality of the film here is poor, is putting it mildly. But, its the best connection between Jean, and Louise that I can find.

Me, on a date?

No, seriously, I cant remember the last time I went out on what would strictly be defined as a date. In a literal sense, I was taken out to lunch, by James, in Boston in 2011, but that was a purely platonic affair, so wouldnt qualify as a true date. Beyond that, no idea, but its a long time ago!

I’ve been chatted up once, or twice, most memorably on my train journey from Huddersfield one lunchtime, when hey, the guy even gave me his phone number, but I never followed it up. So fine, not going out on dates could be looked on as my own fault, but…! I guess I find the idea quite sweet, and something that would be fun, if it happened, but I cant see it.

Yes, I know, famous last words, and all that. I’ll meet someone in Kansas City, have him think he’s in love with me, and it will all develop from there. Kate and James keep telling me that the right person is out there for me, I just find it hard to believe. But… I agree, there, or Hollywood would be an apt place for a Harlow lookalike to find love, wouldn’t it?

So, 7 weeks or so from now, I’ll be being wined and dined, wearing a 30’s style dress, by a man. No, I’m joking, I think? Personally, I think I’d feel guilty for deserting Kate, but equally I suspect that if I got invited out for dinner, she wouldnt let me say no!

Yes, fine, this is what bought this little blog along, this picturejean harlow coloured 4

Seriously, if it wasnt for the eyebrows (and the quality of the jewellery), it really could be me! As in
photoshoot 9

So, who knows? 😉

No, I’m not planning the hen party yet! 😛

The video, well, I was looking for Baby Jane, and then I found this!

No, I dont think it relates to Harlow, but…
