River City Fun

Well, actually, to be honest, this got even more fun when I typed River City into You Tube, and found the video.

Yes, the break is over, thankfully all the writing I planned on doing, and a bit more has all finally got finished today, and I recently sent my efforts over to my wonderful, and long suffering editor, who does a wonderful job of turning my scratchings, into readable English, probably of the US kind, but given where my main audience is, not a problem.

Oh, the title? Well that relates to the inspiration for my writing, to do 1 piece for JD’s anthology of superhero (and heroine) pieces, set in the fictional metropolis of River City. Though now, it seems there is one place in the US, that I visited recently, that also calls itself River City. Pure coincidence, I’m sure.

But yes, one of my 2 characters I wrote for, was such fun, I didnt stop at 1 piece, I’ve ended up doing 5, and she was so much fun, I might even do more in the future, especially if her stories prove popular, when they go on sale. Dont worry, it will only be $2.99, for 5 short stories, an absolute bargain, just a perfect gift for Christmas lol!

Yes, no surprise, it was Flapper Girl, more formally known as Belinda (Billie) Nicholson, that started the writing spree. Once I got the whole 20’s idea in my head, I went with the flow, and it really did flow, much to my delight! As I say, if I can come up with a few fresh ideas, there may well be a follow up. Not till January at least, though, as thats the next time I will have the time to write, no chance of doing so while I’m working, sadly.

Funny thing is, if it wasnt for Mr Darksong, I would never have created her in the first place, so special thanks to him, as thinking up a Superheroine character would have been the last thing on my mind, when trying to come up with an idea.

But now, I’m pleased with it, just hope others are too, though the first one seems to have gone down quite well so far. Hopefully my editor will give me the thumbs up on the other 4, when he sends them back.

Ah, that connection I mentioned? Well think back to where I was in September, so it amused me greatly to find this video, I must say. Personally, I might add, this is not my music tastes, but this was just too good a coincidence not to use it.

Bright ideas for a story

Yes, go back a few blogs, and you might remember I mentioned about an anthology of superheroine stories, set in the fictional setting of River City? Well, yes, Robotica came quite easily for me, and indeed it was quite fun writing a piece about a robot (though strictly she’s more cybernetic, than robot, but anyway…), and it came to me quite easily.

Flapper Girl, now that was a whole different challenge. Firstly, I tried to write a story about a modern girl, who styles herself as a Flapper, and write a piece that way. To be honest, it might have been fun, but all I could draw was a blank.

So finally I decided, if River City has modern day Super’s, they didnt just arrive overnight, of course. So why not put Flapper Girl in her natural era, the 1920’s? But still, given you cant use computers, or the internet as a tool back then, what could I use as a storyline?

Then I remembered one of those popular films set back then, and no, not The Great Gatsby. In fact, the first film version of that was made in the 20’s, though beyond the trailer, nothing survives today, its a lost film, sadly. Sadly, a good number of Louise Brooks’s films have met the same fate.

But, does anyone remember the plot of a certain Julie Andrews film set back then? Probably not, but there was supposedly a bit of a white slave trade going on back then, shock horror! So I updated it a bit, tweaked the title slightly, and…If I say the heroines first name is Belinda, and you shorten it, you might work it out!

So, yes, I settled on the slave trade, though given its going on the EMCSA (as in E for Erotic), I made them being turned into sex slaves. Belinda (aka Billie, for those still trying to work it out) eventually wins the day, with a measure of chaos and fun thrown into the mix. To be honest, I’m planning a series of ‘Billie’ shorts now, to put up as an ebook. Not all will feature sex (this may well be the only one that does, and that is only mentioned in the story line), some will just be in her ‘day job’ as herself, though I am planning one more piece of mayhem with her as a Super.

What I’m surprised, and pleased about, is how easily I found it to write again, I thought it might have been tougher than it was. Still going to have the time issue, but anyway…

Yes, the video, I love it, just love Julie Andrews reaction to events around her. If you want to sing along, fine. Just change the name slightly, thats all… 😉

I need a (Super)hero!

Yes, there is a clue to the video in the title tonight lol!

You may, or may not remember that just about a month ago, I mentioned a friend, who had given me a cameo role in one of his stories, someone I know as Jonathan Darksong, though I’m very sure thats not his real surname, even if the first name is!

Well over recent years, he’s written (or co-written) a whole series of stories about the fictional metropolis, River City. Seriously, its amazing that any sane villain would set foot in the place, given how many superhero’s and heroines there are in that city, but anyway. Or maybe thats the whole thing of being a super villain, you positively (and perversely) enjoy taking them on?

Anyway, in the last few days, he’s issued an offer, or a challenge, depending on how you look at it, for others to have a play in the sandlot named River City, as part of an anthology to be posted just before Christmas. Principally, create your own ‘super’ and introduce them into the criminal hub, that is River City.

Now, normally I would have no chance of doing such a thing, time issues and all that. But this month, I have a week off, so I might be looking to rise to the challenge. The obvious one for me would be ‘Flapper Girl’ but seriously, I cant think what super powers she could possibly have? if anyone can, please tell me! I’d love to write it, but cant think how to make it work. JD has suggested a character called Robotica, half human, half cybernetic, which does appeal, and I already have a few ideas for.

Oh, and apparently Ms Brooks is unavailable, seems a super villain has already grabbed her, and done something dastardly to her, lucky woman! He did say he was going to do so, just didnt expect it to happen so soon!

The video, well, I thought this was as apt as it could get. And lets face it, I need little excuse to play a Jim Steinman song, so lets go with it.

You’re a star

One of the benefits of being a prolific reviewer of stories seems to be I get to make ‘cameo’ appearances in other peoples stories from time to time, under various versions of my name and guises. They are generally great fun, and play to my kinks, or my talents, or indeed both.

Sometimes I know in advance they are coming, the previous time this happened with him, my friend J Darksong tipped me off in advance, and lo and behold, a character called Meredith Gardner appeared in his story, Sleepers. yes, think MC Garden for the surname, I assume? And shock horror, her mind got interfaced with a computer, and for a while at least, she was pretty much turned into a robot. And fine, I was jealous of her, no great shock I guess.

As I say, a few others have played the same nice tribute over the years, they are much appreciated, and much enjoyed.

But this time…I was reading one of the 2 stories he put up this week, and enjoying it a lot, when suddenly to my surprise, a new character enters the tale. To quote,

http://192.155.80.152/LightAndShadowsFiveDark/index.html

I took the liberty of calling in a colleague of mine, a certain expert in all things dealing with digital imagery and data extrapolation, Dr. Stephanie Brooks.

Yes, me! Well, not literally, my surname isnt actually Brooks, its …….. but of course the surname I use nowadays as an author, and on the forum, is Brooks!

As to what the author has in plan for her, I have absolutely no idea, but I’m looking forward to finding out. Of course, my real life job actually involves data, though more the inputting of it, but anyway, more than close enough to be very flattering.

Just wanted to say thank you publicly for this, and to say to my readers out there that dont know his stories, to go read some, he’s a very talented writer, and dear online friend.

The video, well just for me,…

Any Brits at least might recognise a few (very much younger) faces here.
