A glass of champagne, and other drinks!

Yes, on Thursday, its here, the works Christmas Dinner! And typically, just because for the first time ever, I’ve got the day off, can get my hair done, get my make up done for me, and everything else, the weather forecast is awful! So fine, knowing my luck, the whole effect will be ruined anyway! Aargh!

And OK, to add to the entertainment, I havent even finally decided what dress I’m going to wear. Its pretty much down to, err, 4 at present, though in all honesty, its most likely going to be the new, vintage dress, which is full length, very stylish, but I’m beginning to wonder if I want to risk it, at a booze fest, like this could well turn into. I probably will, but…there is a far more important date for that dress next year, so…

The other candidates are a blue, sparkly dress, just about below the knee (I know, the inner sexy Harlow), which would certainly work as a 30’s number, and beyond those that have seen the photo shot pics, no one has seen it. Thats the most likely option, in all honesty, if I decide to play safe. After that, and definitely ranking as outsiders, are a gold, pencil/wiggle dress, with a cut, so that I’ll show plenty of leg, or very unlikely, a nice, but unexciting green number.

Choices, choices, I know.

At least (assuming they survive the weather) the hair, and the make up will be pure Harlow! Yes, even those eyebrows, in all likelihood!

As per usual, I will stay overnight in Leeds, though at a different hotel this time around, the usual one having priced itself out of the market. I know we’re coming out of the recession, but 40% more than last year, I dont think so! At least it wont be so far to work on Friday morning, but I will need taxi’s both ways, but even so, its far cheaper!

Some things are traditional, though I’m not prepared to name names, so…not that most readers here would know them anyway lol!

The other thing I’m considering at present, is to take, or not to take the laptop with me. Normally I would, but normally I’d be going from work, with time to spare, so…Its the choice between going direct from hair/ make up session at 4.00, into Leeds, in which case I will have time, and need the laptop. But, if I leave about 5, or just after, by the time I get there, have a coffee, and get changed, it will be about time to go. And in the morning, given I’m on an 8.00 start, I could get away without it…

But yes, the big issue is the weight. Not taking it turns a quite heavy bag, into a feather! So all in all… like the dress, a late call, I suspect.

Ah, the video. Well, normally before we go into the meal, we get offered a drink, of Bucks Fizz. No, I very much doubt its genuine champagne, but who knows? So, the call has to be

Hairdressing methods, past and present

When you think about it, arent modern hairdressing methods wonderful? Safe colouring methods, relatively at least, clever curling tongs and the like, that given expert hands (and I put my hair in expert hands), makes it all look very simple, and safe. No, I have no desire to colour my own hair, I prefer to let someone who knows what they’re doing, do all that clever stuff.

But, back in the good old days, things werent always as simple, take a look at some of these delights!

Some of those hair dryers, yes, fine, they really arent (apart from styling) that different from what we use today, but seriously, have you seen that interesting machine that was used to curl hair in the 20’s and 30’s! As is pointed out, one of those isnt actually a brain sucking machine, but it sure looks like one!

Oh, alright, fine. Yes, they look awful, but would I give it a try, if I got the chance, of course I would. Hopefully it wouldnt brainwash me, but…a price worth paying, hmm?

Thankfully Jean Harlow only went in for Marcel Waves, which was still more of an art to do than modern curling tongs, but less drastic than that! A picture, to show you what I mean

The snag for Jean was, even if modern colouring methods still rely on bleach, the stuff we use now is a lot safer than the stuff they used back then. Also, she had the hazard of having her hair coloured virtually every week (to keep the platinum blonde colour), whereas mine is only done about every 2 months or so. Therefore, reputedly, near the end, she had the problem that her hair was beginning to fall out, over use of bleach, wrecking her tresses. Of course, we never got to know what the outcome would have been, given her tragically short life.

So, however much of a 30’s girl I might like to be, I might be grateful that we use more modern, and seemingly safer ways of colouring, and curling our hair now.

The video, a tribute to one of those brainwashing machines, sorry, 20’s curling machines

Just the way it is, I guess?

Its always the way, isnt it, if you order 3 items, and 2 arrive promptly, its the one you really need to arrive thats the one not to turn up? Yes, I ordered a couple of things for myself, plus a birthday present for someone else, and no prizes for guessing which one I’m still waiting on.

OK, fine, as long as it arrives before Monday, all will be fine. Hey, if it arrives Monday, I’ll live with it. But…

Oh, and thats not the only amusant that way at the moment either.

Today, I got my hair highlighted, cut (barely, remember I’m growing it out to Harlow lengths), and curled 30’s style. Nothing extraordinary there you might think, other than that the next time it gets done, it will be 2 days before my holiday. Normal tactic would be to have had it done next week, but as I’m out on Monday evening (said person’s birthday meal), I lined it up early. But yes, its getting closer, 9 weeks Saturday, in fact.

After that, I headed across the road, with the idea of camouflaging a couple of lost gel nails, with nail polish, so that I had a full set on Monday, as the plan was to them a week tomorrow. So there I am, looking for Abbi, no sign of her. But Linda’s there, waiting for me, but she’s meant to be busy all day.

Apparently a mass switching of appointments, and a cancellation meant she was free, which was handy, as Abbi wasnt there, back problems! So anyway, after making a start on preparing them (and one other slightly damaged one), I asked when her next appointment now was. Two hours later, so it seemed. So, we switched things around, nails got changed completely, a full set.

So, all these things, just the way it is, I guess?

Which leads me to the video…

Moving forward a decade

No, dont panic, time travel isnt happening just yet. Just my hairstyles, thats all. And yes, I have to say that the fringes in the 30’s are a lot more friendly for a middle aged lady like me, than the ones in the 20’s were. The one thing I have to do now, is get my hair longer, but thats hardly a hardship, lets face it. In fact, it will be good, because more hair will mean more curls, and waves, so that has to be good?

Yes, in the end, it wasnt coloured, just extensively highlighted. Why, because my roots are dark, and my hair isnt in perfect condition, which is related to both my age (I suspect), and the fact I’ve had it done a few times before, so…but for now at least, you’d never know! And yes, it has some curls to it, gentle waves of blondeness. Oh, and with some good advice, the curling/wave wand has now been ordered from Amazon, should be here at some point next week.

So yes, out with the 20’s, in with the 30’s, and my attempt at the Harlow look at least. OK, so because of a slight tremor in my hands (life long, related to polio), I wont be applying multiple layers of mascara to my eyelashes, but apart from that, I’ll take it on. Actually had my eyelashes tinted yesterday, to help on that front, but that will be it, unless someone kindly does it for me.

Due back in 5 weeks, just before my holday, so if anyone has a magic hair growing formula I can use in the interim, let me know lol!

Other than that, I lost a few hairs today. But that was planned too, waxing…as a guinea pig for someone. Dont get me wrong, it would have been done before my holiday, but someone had done their training, needed someone to practice on, and I volunteered. She was fine, too. So my head might have some curls, but my arms have no hairs!

The video, well, its a touch of the 20’s, as decades pass by. The recording though is new, by a group called Postmodern Jukebox, who I know little about, but love their sounds!

The next step of enhancing the Harlow look

Its fair to say that there are a number of things that Jean Harlow is said to have done, that I wont be following up on. For one, she’s supposed not to have ever worried about wearing a bra, but its fair to say her assets were a bit smaller than mine! Hardly surprising, she was 5′ 1″ and weighed about 110 lbs, so her boobs were hardly likely to be massive, lets face it. Had to be a good reason she was called ‘Baby’ lol. Me, I’m 5’11” and about 160!

Another strange thing to a modern woman like me, she never wore panties/knickers! Supposedly she liked to allow her ‘bits’ to breathe, though others have suggested it might also have been so that a man, and his cock could always get easy access, she certainly was no angel, from what I’ve read! Rumours abound of a couple of abortions, but as the certainty of facts on that is shadowy, lets not go into it. I have no plans to have sex, and am too old to get pregnant anyway, even if I wanted to, which I dont! Oh, and seemingly, she drunk a lot more than me too, though thats not hard!

Also, having seen childhood pictures of her, seemingly she was blonde, but not the bright, platinum blonde that she was famed for. That was supposedly created using bleach, a route I have no desire to go down. Of course, her hair eventually (supposedly) paid the price for that, as she was supposedly getting it done most weeks, though of course the kidney failure she was suffering would also have led to hair loss too.

Now, what I am prepared to do to enhance the look. As I mentioned recently, I’ve had my eyebrows arched a bit more, a la Harlow, though mine are still natural (what’s left of them), and not just a pencil line! I’m not sure anyone has even noticed, but anyway…

Oh, and the hair. Yes, I am getting it coloured blonde, though probably not as bright as Jean’s used to be. Though even if I did, modern colouring methods are far safer than the ones used back then! But no, I’m thinking a softer blonde, though my hairdresser might think otherwise. Yes, its being done next Thursday, and definitely 30’s style, something my fringe will be grateful for at least! Which hopefully means a few curls, so yes, I need to look for a curling tong, wave brush or the like, very soon! Oh, and I have to get used to longer hair, seen nothing less than shoulder length from that decade!

I will try, though no promises are made, to get a photo done, post hair styling for you. Hopefully it will only be the colour picture that makes you believe it wasnt taken in the 1930’s, but I wont hold my breath on that.

The video, another famous blonde

Oh, and a couple more things. I am now on Twitter, for those of you so inclined to follow me there. Tag (I think thats the term?) is @Harleanlook , and no prizes for working out where that comes from.

Lastly for tonight, the reason I signed up at Twitter, is an almost certainly vain attempt to become the senior (over 45) face of Coco, with the people I had the photo shoot with last summer, those wonderful folk at Cocoture. So if you want to boost me a little, go to https://www.facebook.com/Finestportraits?sk=app_451684954848385&brandloc=DISABLE&app_data=dlt-1 and vote for the Jean Harlow lookalike blonde, or me, at least. I’m the one in red, and the Harlow comment is also a giveaway. I dont expect to win, but a decent show would be nice

Change of heart

Well, in a sense the title is a bit of a misnomer, because its not so much a change of heart, as finally accepting the glorious fact I’ve already grown to accept, that with a bit of effort on my part, me, and Jean Harlow could at least be sisters! Alright, given how old she was when she died, she would be the younger, prettier one, whereas me, I’m the older, butch looking one lol!

But yes, even more so when I see pictures like this one, I can see the resemblance!

Jean Harlow

So though I wont be giving up entirely on the 20’s flapper scene, and my admiration for Louise Brooks, I’m going to try for a more practical look, the 30’s Harlow look. Hey, if I look that much like her already, why not? At least the hairstyles are a lot more achievable, with the fringe, and the dress style of the era was pretty classy too, so…

So next week, Tuesday to be exact, I’m going to get my hair coloured, and cut, and go for a 30’s style look, rather than failing to achieve the Brooks bob, and frustrating myself into the bargain. Also, my eyebrows (which are natural, not a pencil line) are going to get waxed next week, and Linda is going to see how close to that look we can get for me!

But before then, this middle aged (are you still middle aged at 55?) lady will put another notch on the age count on Sunday, when I reach the grand age of 56! Tragically, thats 30 more years than Miss Harlow managed on this Earth! The birthday dinner on Sunday, well, weather permitting, it will be one of the flapper style dresses in my collection. Though given its March, if the weather goes back to cold again, I might wear something a bit longer! But if it stays mild, well, my legs might get a shock, and an outing!

Hey, I’m not officially becoming a (middle aged) Jean Harlow lookalike until next Tuesday, so, lets go flapper, darlings! Should be a fun evening either way, thats for sure.

The video, well, the song might say that nothing will make you have a change of heart, and this is just the opposite, but…a super song, by a great singer

Still blonde, but having crazy moments

Yes, for those who put their money on staying blonde, go collect your winnings. Mind, the price would have been so short, you wouldnt have got rich on it lol! But let me say here and now, next time around, its being changed. I would say dark, a la Brooksie, and indeed most other young flappers, but my hairdresser tossed another idea at me today, so…good job I’ve got a bit of thinking time! Go brown, maybe with red highlights, hmm…one thing is certain though, it wont be blonde! Yes, my hair naturally is fairly dark, not black, but heading that way. So, quite literally going back to my roots, in that case lol! Probably keep the bob the current length though, wouldnt want to be too boyish looking, despite the boobs!

Oh, the crazy moment? Well, as I mentioned a while back, I won a competition at Christmas, earning lots of free money, in terms of points in the company ‘My Choices’ scheme at least. Snag, most sites you pay by card, and they return the money to your bank account. Fine if you have credit, or debit cards, but me…! One blessing, Amazon, you can buy vouchers with the points directly, so £100 went that way. And up to today, I hadnt spent a penny! Today I made up for that! Several tops, a few dresses, and some nice chocolate later, most of that money is gone! 🙂 Mind, I can soon top it up with another £75, if I feel so inclined, but might rest on my laurels for a while. No, that was all sensible purchases, but…

I’ve managed to sell 4 links for the film, so I had a bit of money in my Paypal account, which was nice. So I duly made my donation to the Lance Mackey medical fund, and then checked out Ebay. What did I see, a long(ish) midi length dress, of the type termed leather look…in silver/grey…for £4.99! You’re right, I couldnt resist, though I’m not sure when I wear it, but I know it will be fun doing so…sometime!

But yes, me buying midi length leather look dresses, I must be crazy, so this video seems apt
