Human, or machine?

I gather that at work, what must be the mind numbing task of recording each benefit, and the amount, for each customer, up to now, has had to be typed in by someone individually. It seems now that humans are going to be rescued from this boring task, by something called ‘Robot Automated Processing’ (or something similar), which will do all this very repetitive stuff, and not get bored in the process.

Sadly for me, though probably not for anyone else, this doesnt involve turning humans into robots, or anything interesting like that, it just simply enables people to be freed up to do something more worthwhile, and hopefully more interesting.

As you can imagine, discussion of this process, and my warped science fiction author mind, came up with a much more interesting concept for this.

Of course, if it was genuinely practical, and possible to turn humans into robots (oh, I wish), then I suspect some employers might be more interested in developing things in that direction, but anyway… For now, morals, and technology say no!

But, I wonder, if this sort of thing could be done, would I be the only person who would enjoy being transformed in this way, or are there others? Would others volunteer, or apart from me, would all have to be dragged to the robot transformation pods? Might be a few others, I guess?

No, this wont be affecting my line of work just yet, and probably by the time its capable of that level of AI, I will be retired, given I have at most, about 5 and a half years to go before then! Even that assumes my back holds out that long, or an opportunity arises to do something else, well…? Mind, I do wonder if I would feel the same way if the opportunity arose, or I’m only so keen on it because its not currently practical, who knows? I’m pretty sure that yes, I would be, but unless it happens…?

OK, video time. No, I know this sounds like OMD, but it isnt. Yes, its the lead singer, and they did record this, many years later, but this is the original Elektric Music version of the song. Kraftwerk meets OMD, quite literally!

The laptop, it is a changing!

OK, a piece of sentiment, as this will probably be one of the last written on this old laptop before its honorably retired from duty. This will be number 924 on here, seemingly, for this blog, though its written even more for the other blog too, so its coming up on 1900 altogether, wow! Only needs 3 more blog days (at 2 blogs a writing day), so whether I let it get to its milestone or not, no idea, but I suspect not, as its getting a bit weighty for an old lady like me.

I’m not quite sure how long I’ve been using this, but it must be getting close to a decade, and it was only second hand then, so in laptop terms, its even more ancient than me! In truth, like me, its got a few ‘physical issues’ nowadays, as the battery now has an unplugged life of less than 30 minutes, and as I’ve already mentioned, in terms of weight, compared to modern machines, its the weight of a dinosaur! Apart from that, its moody (just like me), and its relationship with Internet Explorer nowadays has almost reached divorce status lol! But yes, I suspect I’m going to find the leap from Windows 7, to Windows 10 a bit of a shock for this old dinosaur! But seriously, my new one will be about half the weight, or less of this one, an absolute blessing for me, especially when travelling!

Do you know the irony though, I paid more for this second hand (£200), than my new one (£165) will cost me, even not taking inflation into account over nearly 10 years? My first ever computer, at the turn of the century, about £900, back then!

I know what my biggest hell is going to be, in changing computers, even assuming Ella can simply transfer my favorite lists over? Passwords! Because everything is preset on here, I have no idea what password I am on for lots of sites nowadays! Yes, that could be fun…rolls eyes…

But yes, its going to be nice to be able to run things on IE again, that I cant run on here anymore, just because of the way websites have changed over the years. Mind, I will probably still use Chrome for some stuff, regardless, just out of habit! Yes, if only it was easy to change for a nice new body, lol. Mind, I’d make sure I had all the ‘right parts’ if I did that, believe me!

Oh, and while I’m mentioning the blessings of technology here… Having accepted I need a mobile phone for security/health reasons (mainly the latter, given my physical state), I have the nightmare of trying to do teleconferences on a tiny mobile phone, for lengthy periods of time, with arthritic hands, which get very sore gripping a tiny phone for 30 minutes, or more at a time. So yes, I’m getting one of those headset set ups, so I can listen, and talk, without needing to hold the phone. Mind, I do swear, if someone sees me out, seemingly talking to myself like an idiot, please shoot me! Maybe not, but you get my drift, lol!

So yes, honest, I am trying to drag myself into the modern world, though both are down to need due to age, and health, than any desire to be technologically cool!

I’m not going to say anything about the political sentiments behind tonights song, however tempting it might be, from both sides of the pond. But yes, they’re talking about events of over 50 years ago, within my lifetime, but a whole different world for so many, I guess?

The lady dances

(Clue, do not take this too seriously!)

Not that any of you would have noticed it, because I only ever type the blogs up in the evening, UK time, but I was actually offline for the first half of the day today. Officially the reason was that my laptop had a corruption issue with my user profile log in, and therefore I couldnt get on here. So yes, today, I’m miles behind pace. I did think about passing on the blog tonight, and try to catch up, but what the hell…?

Right, as I said, thats the official reason. Only because you wouldnt believe the actual one, OK? 😉

So, in truth, I’ve been in contact with some crazy scientist guy, who claimed he could make me look like a young Clara Johnson, with all her dancing skills, so that when I fly into Las Vegas next month, and a friend of a friend offers me a contract as a showgirl dancer, I can take him up on  his offer, and make my fortune in skimpy outfits, dancing like a dream, and getting to marry a millionaire at the end of it.

No, I didnt believe him, but I thought I’d call his bluff, so…

Fine, its a bit weird only being about 5 ft 4 tall, and only weighing about 125, but I’ll get used to it, I guess? And hey, its lovely being young, free from arthritic, and back pain, and having amazing dancing skills. But yeah, I guess I’ll get used to it? Who me, dancing in heels, seriously? Fine, I miss the boobs, but hey, nothings perfect, giggle! Now, all I have to do is convince my friend that I really do want her to arrange a producer to meet me at the airport, with said contract, and then wait for men to fall into my lap! Or something close to my lap, anyway, giggle!

OK, fine, it didnt really happen, but it would have been a lot more fun than the real reason I was offline all morning, is that my poor old laptop (its about 10 years old, to be fair) is just getting as old, and moody as its owner!

Mind, if anyone reads this, and wants to arrange for that show dancer makeover for me, just give me a call, OK? 😉

Right, video time. Here, you get the honor of a real rare event, a decent movie close up of Miss Clara Johnson (though she was working as Elaine, her middle name at the time). Yes, if you freeze the film, about 4 minutes 13 seconds, thats her! Its one of two actual credits she got as a chorus line dancer, ooh! Watch the rest, entirely up to you, but if you want to know ‘how I look’, this would be it!

Under whose thumb?

Its amazing to think that just 15 years ago, I’d never owned a proper computer. Yes, fine, in a moment of madness, I did buy one of those awful, early Sinclair things, but comparing those, even to my (by modern standards) extremely basic PC that I purchased in 2000, like chalk and cheese!

Nowadays, the computing powers of modern phones would knock those PC’s into the dark ages, let alone the more powerful computers of today, of which mine isnt one! It does what I need it to do, fine by that, and all, but compared to some…!

Back then, powerful AI was the work of fiction, and nothing more. Nowadays, its still well behind human computing power, but catching up fast. So, just imagine, fast forward another 20 years or so, and what it will be like! So, what do you reckon, who will be in control of things, us, or them?

Because one thing is for sure, at some point in the future, AI is going to overtake human mental capacity, and then? Will they still be happy to serve us, or will they expect us to serve them? Hmm?

And if the latter, will they let us serve as their human slaves, or will they upgrade us in some way, so we are more like them? Just remember, thats what we are doing with AI at present, making them more like us! So how do you fancy a chrome body, and a mind trapped in permanent obedience to your controllers?

Thought not, though maybe some of us might not object as much as others? 😉 It probably wont happen, but just remember these valuable words when AI takes control of the world, all those years from now!

No, it may not happen, probably wont, but it could, just saying…

The video, well, a rather apt song. One of those long forgotten, under rated ones, unless you’re me!
