Extinction rebellion? But only on their terms!

To be honest, unlike a certain US president, I fully believe in the need to do something about Climate Change before its all too late, though I do feel sorry for the people in London who have been unable to get to work due to the protests, even more so those that were trying to use the Docklands Light Railway to get there, when the protesters stopped it running for a while, as logic says that public transport like that is one of the things they should be supporting, whereas I have far less (fine, pretty much none) for those using cars to get around, in a city with a pretty good public transport system, but anyway…

The snag for me, is when said protesters proceed to shoot themselves in the foot, and I dont just mean the light railway thing either.

I ended up (for my pain) watching the news for a while last evening, and of course the whole ‘Extinction Rebellion’ thing came up, both as a subject in its own right, correctly, and also because the main protest point in London is in Westminster, close to Parliament, where ‘another issue’ is a popular subject at present.

But ah, those shoot yourself in the feet moments?

Firstly, and given its now October, one with more need than the others, but hardly great publicity, a mass attempt at a cover up exercise, to try and hide just how many diesel generators they were using on Westminster Bridge to try and keep themselves warm. As I say, it was an evening (about 8.30) in October in London, so probably a wise move, and I’m sure the TV news companies were looking for any chance to do them down, but anyway…

However, other than that…

A couple were saying that they needed to get off the bridge, and make sure that their sports car that they’d driven to London in was still parked where they left it. So they want to protest about the wasteful use of fuel, and everything else that was damaging the climate, but they drove to London in a sports car. We are talking the capital of the country, and its not hard to get to London by public transport, if they’d really wanted to, but…

Then, some woman, of my age, or slightly older could be heard in the background, saying to someone with her, that she was looking forward to her holiday in Spain when the protest was finished. Well…?

As is the way with rolling news coverage, about 30 minutes later, they went back to the area, to discuss the matter more, with other protesters. Fine, the more views the better, absolutely. Snag is, this group of 4 younger protesters were asked what they had planned after the end of the protest. Up piped one of them,

“Well, the 4 of us have a winter holiday planned in Thailand.” was her answer, without an ounce of irony, or presumably putting her brain in gear? Yes, I stopped laughing, eventually!

So yes, climate change protest, which I can safely say I can see the need to get something done about, but presumably only on the terms that suit their own lifestyles? I know, might only be a small number carrying on like this, but all the same…

Video time. This might not be Queen’s greatest record (it isnt, seriously), but with the title, I just couldnt resist

The Heat Is On

Oh, and anyone putting money on Glenn Frey, or Agnetha Faltskog being the video singer tonight, pay up, because you’re all wrong! This is the song sung more famously by one of that duo, but this is this versions original singer. So…?

Despite what numerous cranks, and a certainly ghastly, orange, bewigged person might say, we are experiencing climate change! This summer we are, especially. Not that in many senses I’m not complaining, because heat, and dry weather are far better for my thoroughly busted back than cold, damp, or heaven forbid, both. But yes, sometimes it can get a little too much. For example, some parts of Spain, and Portugal have been hitting 50C, which is over 120F! It hasnt got quite that hot here in the UK, but topping 30C/86F has become pretty much a regular occurrence this summer, even here!

Ironically, as I have discovered this week, even with all this glorious heat, if I try and overdo it, my back still complains way too much! Thats why I’m starting Physiotherapy on my back in Tuesday, even if I cant really afford it until my bonus finally gets paid at end of this month. But yes, needs to be done. It is my fault of sorts, I tried to do 3 days of travelling, and working in a row, and I’m now paying the price.

Oh, and agreed, I’ll be wishing for all this heat during the winter, for sure! If anyone wants to buy me a heat lamp for winter…? No, I dont mean the tanning type, just heat! Yes, I know, lottery win, lol!

But yes, thankfully my nice strong painkillers help me to sleep at night, despite the heat! But yes, honest, Mother Nature, if it dropped into the 70’s, I really wouldnt mind, honest!

OK, I’m not going to ask how many remember Noosha Fox, aka Susan Traynor from the 1970’s? But yes, the first person to record the song that helped Agnetha’s solo career, post Abba, this was it!

Autumn weather

I’m going to keep out of the whole climate change argument, just make a brief comment on the crazy weather in the North East US this last weekend, given that I’ve got a few friends and contacts in that area. Thankfully some got away with a mere 2 or 3 inches, but what other areas got, before October was even out, was just incredible. I’ve seen 20 inches quoted for some places, and even living where I do, on the edge of the Pennines, thats still hard to imagine.

I saw some pictures on the news, and for once, I was glad I wasnt there! I dont know if trains were affected by it, I know the planes were in some places, but clearly we dont get too much details on these matters over here. The comparison that makes me laugh is that if we get 20 flakes of snow over here, everything grinds to a complete halt, probably for days. Over there, by the next day…yes, things were returning to normal! I hope by now that everyone has got power back who lost it, but again, our news doesnt tend to focus on such matters.

I have one advantage, I do know what its like, I travelled across the US in the winter of 2003, and experienced low temperatures and snow en route, but just now, I’m quite glad to be over here, I must admit. I know, James will tell me I’d never even know it happened now, but all the same…

I could say there is something even more scary this autumn, but maybe thats not the right thing to do. But seriously, Buffalo Bills, 5-2, top of the AFC East, frightening stuff! Our firms spread on wins before the season started was 5, and we’re there with 9 weeks to spare, would never have dreamed that possible. Fitzpatrick, Jackson, Johnson and Chandler, most would have said ‘who?’ before the start of the season, thats for sure. Hope it lasts, the dream is amazing at present.

Oh, the video. Well I had to pick something weather based, didnt I? And given its an amazing song, by an amazing artist, I’ll take my chance right now.
