Never rains on California golf courses?

I’m sure you’ve all heard the running joke, most noticeably about it never raining in California? Well, in the summer, and up until the last couple of winters, sadly that had been pretty true. Thankfully, last year, there was rain, solved most of the drought issues, and it seems currently they’re trying to avoid drought issues this winter too.

Last weekend, not only was there plenty of rain at the golf course at Pebble Beach, there was hail too, and indeed I saw a TV image where the complete green seemed to be a shade of white, from that event.

This week, they’ve moved down the coast to my favourite city in the world (probably), Los Angeles, and more specifically, that heavenly place on Earth named Pacific Palisades, where if money was no object, I would very happily retire too. Its gorgeous, relaxed, but close enough to LA for events at the same time.

They were due to start play at 6.40 am local time this morning, on a tight schedule so that they can finish the round before it gets dark again, just before 6 pm. Thing is, when they started, the rain was pouring down, and 40 minutes later, play was called, and they arent even going to consider playing again until 1 pm local time, let alone actually start then. So they’re not going to get far today, lets face it!

I must admit, on my visits to LA, I only remember it really raining once. And yes, when it did, it really did seem like the heavens had opened up. Thankfully I’d been warned, and was in my little apartment at Verbena Drive when it did! But watching the rain pour down, for a short while, and then stop, as if it had never happened, was quite something. As the temperatures soon rose again, it wasnt long before the evidence was gone again, in truth.

All I can say is that I hope that when I next visit Pacific Palisades (hopefully next year), it doesnt feel like I’m in the middle of the great flood, which is how it looked earlier today.

OK, the song choice wins no prizes for originality, just saying…

Going down to San Diego

Yes, one day next month, I plan to take the opposite route to the Chargers, and go down to San Diego, from LA. I will be doing it by train, unlike most people related to the Chargers, who I’m sure would do the journey by plane.

I must admit, in terms of travelling distances like this, I prefer to do it by train, than plane, because you get to see some scenery. Oh, and fine, people watching is always fun too. Having never been south of LA, going down the California coast by train, should make for an interesting journey. Fine, the coming back, after dark may not be as much fun, but will make for a good experience, I’m sure, regardless. In terms of a couple of my US journeys by train, this will be a short hop! That is because previously I’ve travelled from Seattle to Philadelphia and back, about 14 years ago, with 2 changes going (Chicago/Pittsburgh), and 1 (Chicago) coming back. So yes, about 3 hours, as opposed to nearly 3 days…piece of cake!

No, I’m not going down to San Diego to convince the Chargers to stay, or audition for the Padres baseball team, but to meet someone for the first time! Yes, one of those Facebook friends moments! I’ll be fine, she likes Powell, Loy and Harlow lol! I dont know, is it an actress thing, that meeting people you only vaguely know for the first time doesnt really bother me? Given what I know about her, in all honesty, I’m certain it will be a very entertaining 6 hours or so, for sure!

Oh, and she’s a witch, so whether I will be travelling on that train home, or Jean Harlow will, I have no idea. I’m not sure if magic spells are really that good, in truth. I suspect it might be easier to change me into my past life self actress, Clara Johnson, now that would be fun. Not sure how she would react to modern lifestyles, mind!

But yes, 2 more delights to look forward to, next month, in California.

Right, video moment! One of those You Tube search issues, I put the name of the city in, and it found this. I do remember the group, though this song is only from last year, sounds fine to me.

The one area of California I still want to visit.

Its funny, 51 weeks ago, I was reminiscing on here about a golf tournament in the US that I watching on TV, and saying how much I loved the area. Yes, Riviera, in Pacific Palisades, somewhere I suspect I may well return to in May, given that I suspect that unless ‘I make it’, it will be my last visit to the area for quite a while, if not longer. Because in truth, I have no idea how much longer my body will stand up to West Coast flights. And besides, 3 holidays in a row in that area is just way too much lol!

At the other end of the state, I’ve been to San Francisco a couple of times, and loved the city, which definitely includes that baseball park, and the view. And no, that definitely isnt the Oakland Coliseum, though I have seen a game there!

But in between the 2 big cities is one small area that I’d love to visit, though its easier said than done, for a non driver. Yes, thats right, and anyone that knows their golf venues will have worked out, is the area around Carmel, and Pebble Beach.

Fine, as I havent played golf in about 40 years (beyond pitch and putt/ par 3 golf), I have no plans, or desires to actually play Pebble Beach, but I have to say that the golf course looks amazing, and the views even more amazing! Oh, and fine, probably my main reason for going to Carmel is to visit the town, where a certain famous resident lives, though I wouldnt see her. Yes, Doris Day, who will be 93, or 95 this April, depending on which version of her age you go by! I have been a fan of her for probably about 50 years by now!

But in truth the whole Monterey peninsula looks amazing, and I hope one day to get there, though I suspect Doris might not still be with us by then. But fingers crossed…?

So yes, I might have been to California 5 times after May, but it doesnt mean I’ve seen everywhere in the state that I would love to!

The video. Probably one of my favorite Doris Day songs ever, though sadly the only live versions I can find (unsurprisingly) is from the movie, Calamity Jane. Fine by that, but it does mean she doesnt sing the whole song herself, but Howard Keel isnt a bad singer lol!

If you leave, California?

I know there has been talk in the past about the West Coast of the US breaking away, and forming a nation calling itself Pacifica, taking a decent chunk of Nevada with them as well. As far as I can tell, its never got beyond theory, but now, after just one week of Trump in charge, it seems California is getting ready to vote on seceding from the rest of the US. Given that the new Republic of California would rank as one of the top 10 economies in the world, its probably not an impossible ambition. The fact that Washington and Oregon are discussing getting together, forming a nation called Cascadia shows just how unpopular Trump is. I also wonder that if these 2 areas do it, how long before New England might consider following suit, hmm?

Tagged Calexit, which I am sure might be inspired by the Brexit tag, the campaign is on. They do need to get a huge number of signatures by July, but if they do, that could lead to a vote in 2018 on the issue, and if enough people support that, independence, maybe? Ironically, if it did, it would happen just about the time that Trump would be standing for re-election, which could be fun?

Now whether this, or Cascadia, or even Pacifica actually come into existence because of this, no idea? It would take a few events to happen, but if Trump carries on making crazed decisions, like the Muslim ban, well then, all bets might be off!

I was wondering how this might affect the ‘Big 4’ pro sports teams in California, if it happened, but given that 3 of them have teams in Canada, probably not at all. No, no NFL teams in Canada, probably because they have their own league, though talk of the Bills moving to Toronto was mooted for a few years, but seemingly gone away now.

For me, it would be nice if the Republic of California, if it happens, had a looser view on immigration laws. As in, there is one humble British actress who would love to be able to live, and work over there, just saying… 😉 Oh fine, I plan to visit an agency I have contacts with in LA, in May, and see if they think it might be worth me trying to get a working visa/green card, or not. Fingers crossed, all positive, and I might yet get to live, and work in California, while not living in the US! Hmm?

OK, video time. Clue in the title, as so often. No, I decided to resist all the California songs, as I’m sure I’ve used them all before. Might have used this, but not a live version. Warning for the innocent, the F word is mentioned near the start of the video.

It never rains in Southern California!

It pours, man, it pours! Yes, big clue to the video there!

So yes, long before I got to LA for the first time, I’d read plenty about the drought situation out there. And to be fair, those first 10 days, in April 2015, not a drop of rain did I see! Not that I was complaining, but…

Equally, during the 4 weeks I was out there last October, it only rained once! But as the song suggests, on that one occasion, it really rained! Mind, the thing I remember about it more, was the messages coming over the TV from some meteorological station nearby, with flood warnings for some of the valleys north of the city. Yes, I saw some of the pictures, in the few days after, really was something. But yes, that was one day, for about 4 hours or so, and that was it!

So therefore it amused me greatly on Sunday, when Sky Sports went over to live coverage of the Rams game, and the rain was pouring down! Yes, I’m sure when they decided to finally give Jared Goff a start at quarterback, they thought he’d have a nice warm, dry day in LA, and that happened. I’m not saying he would have been great, even in good weather, but that was not the way he, or they would have wanted his career to start. Yes, it was that bad! In truth, the whole game was pretty awful, neither offense seemed capable of doing much, and how the Dolphins keep winning, no idea?

But yes, in his case, it never rains in Southern California, until the one time you dont want it to! Oh, but fine, yes, I hope they get some more rain this winter, because they sure need it in that area. Me, next May, I’d rather pass on it, the way it rains when it does, but I’ll also pass on earthquakes, pretty please! Sadly, another quite big one off Japan recently, I just hope they arent saving the big California one for me!

Oh fine, if you havent worked out the video by now, I give up!

Turn me into the perfect wife, and mother, please!

I have a friend who thinks I’ll make the perfect step mother for his children. Yes, as I’m sure he’s unlikely to read this, I’ll happily question his sanity on that matter. Me, who has very happily never had any children in her life, as a mother? Yes, fine, stop laughing now…maybe?

The other snag for me, is that I am thoroughly out of practice in all other issues relating to motherhood! Yes, those little things like being the perfect cook, and everything else, hopelessly out of practice. I’m the only one in the house thats working, so the others tend to do the meals. And fine, even when they’re away, like next week, its going to be meals, of the ready cooked kind, because of the time factor, by the time I get home from work, and the fact I’m hopelessly out of practice at doing anything more.

And yes, I’m talking years, and lots of them since I last did any real, serious cooking, about 15 in all honesty. So, someone thinking I make perfect mother material, hmm? Of course, I guess I can become good mother material, with time, and practice, but yes, there are times when I wish I could be turned into the perfect 50’s housewife, just like that, a la Stepford method ideally! Fine, I’d enjoy that far too much, but why not?

I dont know, can a 58 year old, who has never had kids, has done limited housekeeping skills in many years, and so much more, become the perfect mother? Seriously? It may well be one of those situations where I’ll jump in the water, and swim like a duck, as I guess when something needs to be done, and you get into a groove, it becomes easier?

But yes, what I’m saying is, if anyone knows of a handy neural download, or a complete mental makeover, that would make me at least a semi decent mother, then please, do it to me, asap! Stepford wife supreme would be heavenly, but anything that gives me the skills to be the near perfect home maker, yes please! My wonderful friend, Stacie is saying she’s going to do just that to me, but sadly, I think she’s kidding!

Oh, fine, I have an incentive, lets face it. Who wouldnt want to be a step mum in California, lets face it? Its just that I want to at least be good at it, for his sake, and his children’s sake too, but as things stand, hmm?

So yes, if anyone knows any method that can turn me into a good housewife/working wife, and mum, let me know, I think I might need it! Fine, I’m sure I do, but…

Right, the video. Well, you know me, I love all things vintage, and yes, being ‘transformed’ into the dream 50’s mum/housewife, would be heavenly. In truth, my heart is probably in the 30’s, but of course, the whole ‘dream mother’ scenario of Stepford is so 50’s, that…

Not that this woman would make the perfect 50’s mum, it has to be said. Perfect sex kitten, absolutely, mind. Folks, let me introduce the absolutely amazing, Eartha Kitt!

California, here we come

Yes, I know, a lot of the readers come here for the mind control stuff, but equally, the California stuff seems pretty popular, and given I love the state, I’m happy to provide some stuff about it too.

So fine, tonight, lets do a couple of California sports items, one of which many people will know about, the other, far less so.

Lets be wicked and start with the less popular one. Today, in my news feed, this piece came up

http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_29766643/fremont-first-synthetic-turf-cricket-field-u-s

To be fair, to some degree, cricket has been played for over 100 years in California, though I suspect numbers, other than ex-pats from cricket loving countries, may be a bit limited? But yes, there appear to be a few teams in the Bay area, a few more in the Los Angeles area, and maybe a few more around the state? But yes, its great to see a floodlit ground, with hopefully a decent synthetic turf wicket being created, I must say. No, I dont envision the sport suddenly becoming amazingly popular in California, but things like this can only help?

The other, better known recent news about sport in the LA area, is the return of the NFL, to the city. Not that I’m sure how good the Rams will be, on their return, though their draft gamble this week shows signs of positive attitude for the future, more so for when they move to Inglewood, hopefully in 3 years time. But yes, why they took my eye this week, was because of the announcement on Thursday, of the schedule for the forthcoming season. To be honest, before Wednesday, I hadnt realized they were playing my team, the Buffalo Bills this season, at home. Hey, I hadnt even realized they were playing the Bills until then!

Oh, the funny point, the date of that game? October 9, a date that last year saw me in LA. Put it this way, if I was there on that date this year, I know where I’d like to be! Thats right, the Coliseum, watching that game. What better way than that to break my NFL virginity, other than maybe a home game in Buffalo! Ironically, the week before, they are away to the team my dear friend Kate supports, and most Bills fan hate, the Patriots! Me, I’m not infatuated in anybody enough to hate other teams, especially ones supported by my wonderful friend.

But yes, the chance of me getting there, short of a generous benefactor, or a fluke lottery win at present, seems to be zero. Still, I guess I can dream for a bit, at least?

Right, the video. I found this song, and was surprised how much I liked it. I know nothing about the group, other than what I can find on Wikipedia at least, just found it on a random search on You Tube. Yes, what I’d like to be able to say in October, if not sooner.

A Winter Wonderland?

Yes, I know a few people who were hit by the snow storm over the weekend, on the East Coast of the US. Thankfully, as far as I know at least, all are fine. As an added treat, Storm Jonas is now heading for the UK, but thankfully (I think?) by the time it gets here, having crossed the Atlantic and all, it wont be snow that hits us, it will be rain. Mind, given how flooded some areas have been in Yorkshire, I’m not sure that a possible 4 inch dump of rain is necessarily a good thing?

I have seen several feet of snow on the ground before. Thankfully, I was on a nice warm train, crossing the Rockies in the winter of 2003. And by the time I got off the train briefly, in North Dakota, it wasnt snowing, but was exceedingly cold! Minus 25F, dont ask me what that is in centigrade, but its cold. But of course, much of the snow had been swept off the platform, so all was fine.

Thats not to say I havent been out in a snow storm, because I have. November 2014, in Albany, I experienced a snow storm where 11 inches of the stuff was dumped on the city. Do you know what, the buses kept running, though admittedly, that was down a main road, I’m not sure if it was the same on lesser routes, but…they were used to it, nothing ground to a halt, unlike when we have more than an inch over here, probably less!

I’ve seen pictures of New York, I’ve also seen pictures of more rural areas, and the way the snow built up, is quite amazing. Yes, I know, public transit was stopped in places, roads were closed in a few too, but I do think that was wise on the whole.

Who, me, I prefer California weather, I think. Last night I was watching the golf, from Palm Springs, much more my kind of weather lol!

Given that one dear friend on Long Island, said he would do nasty things to anyone singing ‘Let It Snow’, I thought I’d better choose something else for the video tonight, so you can have this Doris Day track instead.

Visiting California

Its funny how things play out, no sooner had I decided that next year that I would visit, Los Angeles, most specifically, Hollywood, and someone not in the tourist authority came up with this story

http://192.155.80.152/Draconia/index.html

Gee, if someone was trying to put me off going to the place, this would be it! Don’t worry, its pure fiction, or so I’m told! Mind, if the Dreamscape turned me completely into Jean Harlow, would that be a bad thing? 😉

On a more serious note, one of the things that the trip to Hollywood will give me, is the chance to add one (and possibly in theory, two, if I could be bothered to go to Anaheim) more stadium to my growing collection of baseball parks visited. Yes, a trip to Dodgers Stadium, fixture schedule permitting, is a safe bet.

Yes, I’d love to see Clayton Kershaw pitch, the man is amazing. But given I will have to roll with the fixture list, and the fact these guys only pitch every 5 days, my chances of doing so, may be slim. But there is one Dodger legend, named Vin Scully, that I will get to hear at least, as he will be back for an incredible 66th season commentating on Dodgers games next year! Hey, he’s been there so long, that he was with them in Brooklyn, pre 1957!

You could say, that just like Clara Bow, he left Brooklyn, for L.A, and never went back! What else Hollywood has in store for me, well, who knows?

The video, well, I’m old enough to remember this first time around, and thats nearly 50 years ago! Next year, again, for one week, I will be a California girl. Well, if I get invited by a movie star to play the role of Jean’s mother, in a new (and factually correct) biopic of Jean’s life, well, I might not say no!

Spirits in the material world?

Ah, lets get on to a subject of popular debate, and one loosely linked to my holiday in September, as you will see shortly. Is there really such a thing as ghosts, or is it just imagination…or alcohol?

No, I’m not going to go off on the whole haunted house thing, I’m totally non committal on the whole affair anyway, but I’ve heard a few tales.

As far as I know, I’ve never seen a ghost, but how can you be sure? You pass so many people on the street, or in busy buildings, how are you to know if they are truly flesh and blood…or just a spirit passing by? Fine, the likelihood is 99.9% certain they are real, but…can you be totally sure?

As I say, I’m torn, though I’ve never seen a ghost (to my knowledge), I have certainly felt a presence in a room, when nobody else has been there, so…? Your call!

So how does this relate to me, and my Kansas holiday, you might ask? Obvious answer, Jean Harlow!

I am never sure how much credence to put into these stories, but given there have been supposedly a number of sightings of her ghost, in her Westwood home, in California, well…? Does her spirit still walk this world, in that home, where one of her husbands met a mysterious death? No, it isnt believed that Jean killed him herself, general views are either suicide, or his former wife, but…her ghost? From comments I’ve read, her ghost is quite a character, assuming its her, and assuming they are true sightings.

But sadly, unless her ghost decides to pay a visit home to Kansas City, in mid September, I will never know! Obviously I would be thrilled if she did, but even if the stories are true, I assume she’s tied to that house in California? But if she can travel, the option to visit, or to stay in my body, her call!

But until I meet a ghost, for real, I’m keeping my options open. Oh, the dates, if you’re reading this, Jean. I’ll be in Kansas City (and the locality) from 13th, until the 20th of September, and I’d love to meet you. Maybe I could discover just how much of a lookalike I am! But seriously, no, I dont expect it to happen, but a girl can dream.

I will also have the thrill of a visit to Cherryvale, the birthplace of Louise Brooks to look forward to as well, cant wait. And no, I’ve heard no stories at all of her ghost roaming the world.

The video, rather apt, despite the song being against the government of the time, and nothing to do with ghosts!
