No More I Love You’s

Confused by the title? Well, fine, I picked it to fit in with a simply brilliant video that I discovered while writing my other blog. I was going to do something silly, but having seen Annie, and this…

Yes, we’ve had a bit of snow overnight, and today, here in the UK. So much so that unsurprisingly all turf horse racing was abandoned for the day, and indeed has been for tomorrow already!

To be honest, apart from that legendary race, the Grand National, I havent had a bet in some years now. In truth, I’m not sure if I’m even going to bother with the National this year, or not. I suspect I will, but dont quote me on that. Why? Because I still do free to enter horse racing competitions on a website called Betfair, and one of those will involve picking 2 horses, plus a reserve for said race. So having picked those, I might feel the urge to take my chance, and…lose Β£6 probably!

The Betfair site has a forum, and on there this morning was a thread about the amount of snow in your location in the UK. Someone not a million miles for me said he hadnt seen any, but I certainly had by then. It was then I noticed he posted last night, not this morning, and back then, yes, no snow. However, its a site where you cant delete postings, so there it had to stay. Anyway, seemingly he was about 8 miles from me, not a lot older than me, and then someone jokingly said the site had become like match.com lol! Fun ensued, but anyway…including him declaring his feelings for me, and…

In truth, if they knew the state of this 60 year old body of mine, they’d run a mile. Lets face it, with my damaged body, if I was a racehorse, they would probably have put me down. Legs are damaged, back is bust, arthritic joints et al…?

But yes, I guess invisibility on the internet can be a handy thing at times, even if I do own up to all my woes, they still cant see how plain I am, so…?

Just be grateful I thought of this, the only other idea I had was the perfect winter coat for me. Full body, including hood, either thermally lined throughout, or with its own heating system, in a perfect metallic silver color! πŸ˜›

Right, video. I’ve given enough clues, so lets just roll with it. And yes, I’d love to wear what Annie’s wearing!

Wake up the ghosts, the dogs are coming

Yes, thats right, its nearly Iditarod Race Time again. The parade through Anchorage is next Saturday, and the long trek to Nome starts a week today.

But why the comment about waking up the ghosts, and the aptness of the video, you ask? Well, quite simply, for the first time in 5 years, the race actually is going to go through the town its named after, Iditarod. Normally this would happen every 2 years (so should have been 2015, and 2017), but due to climate change, and the lack of snow in the areas at the start of the race, the last 2 southern route events, have been even further north events, with the restart in Fairbank, and a revised first half of the route, which then made using the southern section a no go!

Therefore the decision has been made, that this year, as well as next year (which would be normal route), that the decision would be to go south, via Iditarod. Now strictly, its defined as a ghost town, as no one lives there any more. In truth, beyond about 1920’s hardly anyone, bar the odd trapper lived there, once the gold rush was over. Supposedly someone lived there, trapping, until the turn of the century, but then he decided the place had got a ‘bit lively’ with the dog race arriving once every 2 years, and he left town!

Supposedly, and unsurprisingly, the town is supposed to be haunted by some who lived there, over 100 years ago now. How true that is, no idea? But its fun to believe it, I guess?

No, I will never visit Iditarod, the only traffic through the place nowadays that is known about, is this dog race, and I’m not taking part in that! And I’m way past an age where I’m volunteering to help out, given the crazy freezing temperatures in that area of the world at this time of year. Anchorage? Well, maybe, assuming my back, and my body lasts until 2024, and retirement, because thats my planned reward to myself for getting that far inΒ  life. I will need to take a break somewhere en route, both ways for sure, but if I’m not working…? Nome, I’d love to, on a day trip, or an overnight flight stay while there, just to say I’d been there, but I doubt it. Mind, if I do, I’ll go more in summer than in winter! Brr!

But yes, if there are ghosts in Iditarod, and they’ve been enjoying the peace for 5 years, they’re in for a shock in the next couple of weeks! The humans, and dogs, are returning again, after so long.

Many years ago, I did use this song, when discussing Alaska, and the race before, but that was about 4 years ago. And anyway, this is a newer, live edition, not the one I used back then

Give us this (many) days?

As that date gets nearer, its hard to believe that just 25 years ago, or so, I’d have 22 days to go until retirement. For reasons relating to life expectancy, and other related stuff, its now going to be 6 years and 22 days! Or is it?

No, I’m not getting political, though there are a group of women that are trying to get the age adjusted, or get compensation for the extra period of time before retirement, but given my job, not getting into that in the slightest.

But at the same time, I do wonder if my body is going to last that long, at least in a physically strong enough state that going to work, even my current 4 days a week is beyond me? Especially given that as a non driver, I have to use public transport, and you cant enhance the seat on a bus on a long term basis lol! Car seat, yes I’m sure I could work something, but on buses, and trains, not going to happen.

Theoretically, I have a pension I could claim at 63. Snag, its only a matter of Β£2-3 K per year, and I certainly couldnt live on that! And thats before you get into all the matter of name changes since I worked in that job, so…? Technically my Insurance number hasnt changed, so they should be able to track it, but anyway…not going to be enough to give up work!

Its not quite as bad as that. In practice, if I was unable to work because of my physical health, I would get disability benefits, but really, in truth, that would always be a last resort for me. But yes, I suspect it will happen at some point, in truth, but hopefully I’ll be wrong. But given the state of my back, even now… And again, its not a fortune, so…

I suspect that as with so many medical treatments, eventually they will catch up with back issues, and be able to repair them, or replace them. But for now, understandably, they’re a bit nervous about doing much to the spine, because there is a big chance of only making it worse, not better. Yes, 30 years from now, back replacements will probably be like knee, and hip replacements today! I hope so, for others at least.

In the meanwhile, I guess I’ll just have to see how long I can take the pain. Or until a major lottery win… Oh fine, I’m laughing at that last comment too!

Video time. Only surprised I’ve never used this, as its one of Ultravox’s bigger hits, but anyway, you get it now at least!

Ring, ring, why did you give me a call?

One of the hazards of working in a call center, is the fact that you cant control when you’re going to get a call. Most of the day, doesnt matter, because even if its just before your food break, you take your time from when you’re actually free, no issue.

But there is one time when it really matters, and thats just as you’re getting ready to finish, and go home. Yes, last night, just before I was about to get finished, and do my ‘dash’ for the bus station (dash is an optional word nowadays, given the state of my body), I heard that dreaded ‘bleep’, and a call came through.

To be honest, it wasnt that long a call, just over 5 minutes to take the call, and complete the notes, but… in truth, I have about 3 minutes to spare to get my bus home, so even that, I’ve then got a 22 minute wait for the next one. Not the end of the world, but given I dont normally get home before 8.30, and that makes me later… Oh fine, at least I wasnt working today! Oh, and given I was then in no rush, I ‘consoled’ myself with a bar of chocolate! But fine, I’d still rather get home earlier, but…

To be fair to work, when that happens, and you leave more than 5 minutes late (and I did, just), you add it to your hours, so I dont lose at that end, not quite so bad.

Fine, I know, you dont know where I work, what my hours are, or anything, but please, 2 minutes before the end of my shift, dont give me a call! πŸ˜›

Video time. Vintage Abba, and seemingly vintage live Abba. Yes, I love Frida’s outfit, and collar, cant possibly think why? πŸ˜‰

You’ve not seen nothing like the mighty Cougars!

Oh fine, on the first day of the rugby league season over here for my team in the UK, lets confuse all my US readers totally! How best to describe the sport to most Americans, hmm? Best I can suggest is American Football, only a lot more kicking, and no body padding! Fine, I’m sure you can find something on You Tube, if you really want to know more.

Strictly, the top 2 divisions over here have already (just about) got under way, but the bottom division, in which my beloved Keighley Cougars play, today was the day. And yes, they started the season with a win too! Yes, Rugby League does exist below Super League, for the doubters.

I’m guessing my first visit to watch them play, was on a visit ‘up north’ when I was in my teens. Not that I had much clue what was going on back then, and in truth, probably didnt really care! But thanks to watching the sport on TV back then, with BBC providing coverage, and Eddie Waring doing the commentaries, I got hooked. So after that, whenever I was visiting the area, and they were at home, I tended to go to a game, for a giggle!

There have been a lot of bad days for the team, and some good days in the 90’s as well, and I’ve sort of followed them through thick and thin. Irony being, that since I moved up to Yorkshire, just over 12 years ago, I’ve been to 1 home game! Yes, getting there from Huddersfield, on a Sunday, by public transport, not good. But even now, there is still one rugby league result I look out for each Sunday all the same.

What, support Huddersfield? Oh please, no thanks! A lot has happened over 60 years, but one thing has never changed, the rugby league team I follow. And no, I dont expect that to change during my lifetime!

Will I ever go to a game again at Cougar Park? Who knows, would have to say its doubtful, given the travel, and given my state of health. But all the same, every Sunday, until the end, I’m sure there will be one result I look out for.

Video time. A pair of songs that actually probably predate my first visit to watch Keighley play. Certainly do those that I remember, but I might have been as a small child, and just not remember it? Yes, they’re called the Manfreds, mainly because the main ‘Mann’ has his own group nowadays. But there are more of the old group here, and as can be seen they can still sing the songs!

My favorite golf venue of the year

You might ask how this is my favorite golf course, when I’ve never even been there, let alone ever attempted to play there? Fine, more shortly. In fact, in my life, I’ve only ever visited 2 famous golf courses, and played at both, though not on the famous courses. Yes, putting greens only, lol. Having said that, the 18 hole putting green course at St Andrews is definitely not your average dull course. Carnoustie is a more normal version, but playing on it, literally as people are walking down the 18th fairway, just a fence away from you, still quite special.

But no, the closest I’ve been to this course is on a number 2 bus, heading to, and from Pacific Palisades. Yes, the US tour is playing at Riviera Country Club this week. And yes, in truth, its not the golf course shots I love, its the location views, which the TV companies involved, deign to give us.

Its funny, if things had gone as planned that first time, I may never have visited, and fallen in love with Pacific Palisades. I was heading for Beverly Hills, assuming the bus heading in that direction went there, but it didnt. By the time, I realized I’d got it wrong, that we were well past that location, I decided to stay on the bus, and take my chance, until we arrived somewhere where I could get lunch, maybe a look around, and then, with my tail between my legs (proverbially), turn around, and head back to Hollywood. Yes, I ended up in Pacific Palisades, and fell in love with the place. I dont think it was just the reasonably priced massage parlor, that eased a few aching limbs that clinched it, though that may have helped. It was the laid back feel of the place, the wonderful views of the sea, down the canyon, and everything else that cracked it, I’m sure. Fine, a wonderful ice cream parlor might have helped too!

Since then, I’ve been back there on each of my trips, and if I get to LA again, its a certainty that PP will be visited on that trip too. Though fine, walking down, and definitely up the canyon might be less practical now, with my back!

Oh, and one other thing of golf at Riviera, long range shots of Santa Monica Pier! Not that I’ve ever ridden any ride there, but got plenty of other good memories of that pier! So fine, if they want to show a bit less of the golf this weekend, and a bit more of the locale, I for one, would appreciate it!

Right, video time. Let me say this was one of those You Tube searches, not a song thats my thing in the slightest. But given the video has lots of shots of PP, and Santa Monica, I’ll live with it!

If I Could?

Is it ironic, or depressing that I was asked today what I wanted for my 60th Birthday present, and I hadnt got a clue! I could come up with a few impossible dreams, like a new body, a fully interfacing robot suit, or a nice flying saucer, but when it comes to talking of something realistic, and practical, I hadnt got a clue! Oh, I also wouldnt mind having a share of Clara Johnson’s dancing skills for the 20’s party at Blackpool next month, on my birthday, but thats not going to happen either! A reliable public transport service would also be nice, but never going to happen!

I’d love to say my lack of ideas is because I dont need anything, but I’d be kidding you if I said that. But most of the things I might need, are boring articles like bras, shoes, and the like, and really, in truth, I would love to think that the 60 milestone should be, I dont know, more exciting than that?

Oh fine, a spectacular dress might be nice, but how often would I wear it? Especially given that most of the really spectacular dresses arent items you can just put in a washing machine to launder?

But yes, if anyone has any bright ideas what a ‘crazy’ old lady might want for her birthday, within a pretty sensible budget, feel free to suggest away. Please note, that unless you’re in a position to provide said robot suit, flying saucer, or something similar, there is no point in suggesting it, however much I might enjoy them! Just remember, I’m not in great physical health before suggesting anything too wild in that sense, either! But fine, if someone wants to tell me they can arrange for me to look like, and be able to dance like a young Clara Johnson, on my birthday, try stopping me! No, not going to happen, but I can dream…?

Seriously, if anyone can think of anything I should be suggesting, please, please let this crazy old lady know! I would say thanks in advance, but knowing that no one is going to suggest, is there any point?

Tonights video, not strictly the blog title, but close enough. A big name line up, star performance of the song!
