The insularity of the USA

Before anyone thinks otherwise, this is not about politics! Its about owning credit cards, and phones not registered in the US, and trying to use them over there! I know, I havent got a mobile phone anyway, but…

The first time I discovered this anomaly was a few years back, when I was trying to slyly buy a small thank you gift for Kate, for the way she’d treated me that week. I knew one of her favorite stores, because we’d visited one in a mall, so I had the advantage there, but…I went online to arrange a gift card to be delivered to her home address, only to discover that there was seemingly no way to use a UK credit card on the site, as it rejected firmly a postcode, as a variation on a zip code. So I contacted their customer service, and yes, you’ve guessed it, unless you had a US registered credit card, you couldnt use it!

The next time this faced me, I was trying to top up my little AT&T cell phone over the phone, and the automated system wouldnt accept it without a zip code! Fortunately I managed to get through to a human, and he managed to do it, by using the zip code 00000! So the next time I needed it, to order in food in my LA apartment, I tried that trick, but no go! So I had to ring through the order, and that worked fine!

But yes, this time its not the card thats the issue, its the lack of a US cellphone. Yes, I have one, but the Sim Card expires after 90 days, and its more like 500 days since I last used it. So yes, I’m going to need to get a new one after arrival, but I knew that. Anyway, in the past, I’ve been able to book my shuttle out of LA airport, into town online, with Prime Time Shuttle. Unfortunately, like so many websites, they’ve changed it recently, and now you need a US cellphone number, to get an activation code, to make a booking. Yes, fine, unless you’re an International customer, and then…rolls eyes! I suppose they wont lose that many bookings, because most users are North American, but…thankfully Supershuttle arent as demanding, so I’ll probably book with them. The other option is to be online with my friend in the US, give them her mobile phone number, she pass me the activation code, but seriously…?

USA, there’s a big world out there you know, beyond your shores, though Trump, and his cronies might like to wish otherwise. Well, other than Russia…Sorry, I said no politics, but…yes, frustrating.

Of course, if someone wants to pair up with this old lady, and give her a US address of her own…Just dont tell Donald just yet lol!

Right, video moment. No, absolutely nothing to do with the blog! When I was a teenager, a ‘different’ US group called Sparks burst on the scene, remarkably, over 40 years later, they’re still going strong, and indeed will be issuing a new album shortly, and supposedly doing a world tour. Would I love to see them, especially in LA, their home town, you bet I would. Shame I probably wouldnt be able to use my credit card to do so, even if I got the chance! This will be their new single, as quirky as ever!

Going back to my youth?

It does seem to me that most decades have had some great fashion moments, but equally, some shocking ones too. There would however be a reasonable case for saying that the 70’s only had the shocking ones. There probably were some nice fashion styles in that era, I just cant remember any!

Oh fine, I’m not proud to say I remember the whole Bay City Rollers tartan look thing, and I certainly remember the, err, spectacular looks of glam rock, for both women, and men! Some were worse than others, but most werent good! No, punk rock was never terribly my scene, so fine, lets ignore that, shall we?

But fine, the tight, revealing outfits, and the platform boots, so beloved of that era, oh fine, I remember those! Thankfully, or otherwise, as I was at school during the height of the glam rock era, I missed out on most of that. Not entirely, but thankfully, cover bands werent filmed back then, unlike today in these You Tube days! So, no, you cant see me strutting my stuff lol! 😛

But fine, put Middle Of The Road in a You Tube search, and just maybe…? Oh fine, the Abba look wasnt a lot better! Mind, I suspect many people found the flapper look shocking in the 1920’s, even many younger people lol!

OK, all the same, when I look back on that era, even now, it was fun to live through though!

Right, talking of shocking 70’s looks, brings us to tonight’s video! Yes, this is 70’s kitsch at its worst, in all truth. But if you take it as a look back on fashion history, and put a few fingers over your eyes, its quite funny to watch. And yes, people really did wear clothing like this back then!

Who me, evil mind controller?

Yes, that title is full of sarcasm, before anyone starts panicking or anything, though I did wonder last night, but besides all that…

Yesterday was my first day back at work after my holiday (I know, one day back, then a day off, but its just the way it plans out), and all went fine. Pleasant enough, not too crazy day at work, with a finish at my standard time, 7 in the evening. Oh fine, I got teased gently for using my flirting skills on a client to placate him, but if you heard the difference in his tone from when he called, to when I finished the call, yes, it works! Not that I’m ever going to meet any of them, so it really doesnt matter, and I doubt he saw me as a 59 year old spinster type down the line anyway!

Well, I walk down to the bus station, and head up to the bay where the bus to Huddersfield goes from, and I could see through the window that my favorite seat was taken. Its the last row of the main front facing seats on the bus, and they’re raised above the rest, so you get a better view. Worse, I looked across, and the one opposite, behind the driver was also taken. Fine, then I got on the bus, and I forgave one of them at least.

No, I dont know why I have a crush on her, she is exceedingly slim, and I prefer my women to have a bit of curve to them. She doesnt make up for it with stunning looks, though she’s certainly not hard on the eyes, all the same. She’s cute though, just saying. Yes, not that much younger than me (40’s, probably?), but sadly, I’m pretty sure she’s got a wedding ring, but that doesnt stop me crushing, at least.

So fine, I was not going upstairs, and missing out on her, even though there were limited seats available downstairs. No, I didnt go and sit next to her, though fine, it might have been tempting. Instead I sat in the middle of the long seat at the back of the bus, but fine, I cant see her face from there. There were 2 people sat in seats where I could have done, so secretly I willed them to get off the bus, and let me change seats. One woman took no notice of me (actually got off at same stop in Huddersfield), but after a few stops, the guy in the seat opposite her got up, and got off the bus! Yes, I changed seats pretty quickly! Sadly, all too soon, the bus got to Bailiff Bridge, and the crush of my life got off the bus, but I knew that was going to happen!

But fine, I hope the only reason that guy got off the bus was because it was his stop, and not because some wicked woman controlled his mind to do so! I know, cant be done, but I was so surprised when he got off so quickly, that…I hope neither he, or she actually read this, lol!

The video. Well, in truth, until I did a search on You Tube, I had no idea there was a live version of this, but lo and behold, with a title apt for that cute blonde…

Spirit in the sky?

Oh fine, not hard to work out the video, but which version. Quite a song, twice been a ‘one hit wonder’ and another artist who recorded it, topped charts, but was last hit of his career! So is this song jinxed, who knows?

Firstly let me say, as Dorothy, and Alice have said in a meme, I’ve seen, and done some crazy things in my life. Yes, I believe in ghosts, and there have been a couple of times (even excluding the weirdness with things in my room, in the past) when I have firmly believed I have been in the presence of ghosts, though as far as I know, I’ve never actually seen one. Clearly the intrigue about the ghosts of Harlow, and one of her former husbands, Paul Bern intrigue me no end. True or not, no idea, though the comments relating to 1 sighting of Jean suggests the ghost was sassy enough to have been her! But hey, most people have an idea how she would behave, so cautious of saying it was her, though.

Indeed, my only contact with people from a past life, is my famous past life regression, and because of the nature of it, my memories of the whole event are slightly vague. Sadly not recorded, as I’m told ‘my voice’ was nothing like my own, so clearly it was Clara talking!

In my sheltered life, I’ve never been to a medium. I have no desire to talk to my parents ever again, and until Clara appeared, in truth, I had no one who had passed away that I wanted to talk to. Now, if I got the chance to talk to Jean, or Clara, you bet I would! Nor have I ever been to a seance, not in a serious sense, via a medium, or even that thing that so many teens seemed to do, with the Ouija Board!

But yes, when a friend in LA was discussing holding a seance later this year, I was interested. Even more so when May was suggested as a possible date. Sadly it looks like it will happen before I reach town, but yes, I would have gone if I’d been there. I know, Clara probably wouldnt show, and I’m even more certain Jean wouldnt have done, but you can never tell! In truth, I’d rather it be Clara, as I’d love to know more about her, given the exceedingly limited information available about her. I hope to solve some of that issue in September, but fine, if I found out more in May, and I could go and pay my respects, that would just be so special! Oh to know her married name! No, I have no great desire to look through all the Los Angeles marriage records from 1937 to about 1942, if I can help it! But…? Though I guess, if someone could get me entry into the records office, I could be tempted to spend a few hours looking!

So yes, if anyone knows of a genuine medium, or seance event, in LA, between May 18, and 26, let me know. No, I cant afford a private appointment before you ask, far too poor for that!

Right, the video. The song you know, the version you might not. This is the middle version that reached Number 1, and no, I’m not either of the women in this lol!

Respect yourself, Miss Harlow

I seem to be fast becoming the Diversity Queen of the DWP, which has to be a good thing, and I’m proud of anything I can do to help with this matter, for sure. I’m not quite in movie star mode for interviews, in that I still have to get to them by bus, definitely so sign of a chauffeured car at present, ah well…So no, not quite in the Harlow class just yet. Maybe the film studios are saving that for May, in Hollywood, but I very much doubt it! But a lady can dream, for at least 2 more months, so…?

On Tuesday, I was enhancing my Harlow look, with the semi perm make up top up session, though it didnt involve me being shrunk to a mere 5 ft 2 ins tall, or anything dramatic like that. Sadly, it didnt involve me becoming 20 something again either! But the eyebrows are now even more 30’s style (though with a saner width to them), and I have the Harlow rosebud look on my lips, so, playing Mama Jean at least, absolute piece of cake! So, if some studio wants to call, and discuss the part? Yes, I wish!

The intriguing thing about being a stats loving type, is that I do tend to look at the stats for my 2 blogs more than I probably need to. The main thing that interests me, is what blogs, other than the most recent ones, are attracting a lot of interest. As I’ve mentioned before, there are 4 regular candidates who appear a lot, but of late, in just the last few days, this one has rocketed back up the viewing charts!

https://robotunit8.wordpress.com/2016/08/17/youve-got-the-power/

Yes, the one I did when I was looking for assistance with the last story, that ECT one. No, I never got an offer, not even a placebo one. I mean, dont get me wrong, I wasnt seriously expecting anyone to offer me a full voltage session, but I thought that maybe, if nothing else, I might have got an offer of a look at a suite, and maybe experience a non voltage session, but no. But the last few days, someone, or a lot of someone’s in the US (yes, you get country location in your stats) have been looking intently at this blog. No, no one has actually offered yet, I might add.

I know what you’re saying, the books written, even sold a few copies, so I dont need to do the research any more? Maybe you’re right, but all the same, yes, if given the opportunity, to any degree, I’d definitely take it. Hey, I can edit the story if needed lol! 😛 Oh, that story, for those who wish to be reminded…

As if an actress would ever do anything like that? 😀

Right, video time. Resisting the temptation to avoid Bruce Willis quite easily lol. Something that all LGBT people, and indeed all people need to do! Folks, let me introduce most of you (I suspect) to the Staple Singers!

Whatever happened to, that British actress?

So fine, as I move towards my 59th Birthday tomorrow, I’m feeling philosophical, so just bear with me. I will warn you now, what I will be like this time next year, when I hit the big 6-0, you probably dont want to think about!

So lets turn back time, and think about what might have happened, in an alternate universe. Right, so when I reached 16, I didnt have to leave school, and go out to work, because I had 2 parents living at home, and their ‘dear daughter’ could have stayed on at school, taken her A Levels, carried on acting at school, and then gone on to university (college to my US readers), and taken life from there. Or just maybe, instead of a university, I went to Drama School, on a serious basis.

The obvious outcome from there would have been a modest career, either doing small parts in a large venue, or decent parts in a small venue, until the ‘right person’ came along, and I settled down, got married, parts dried up, family came along, and all that, and it might still have been it. Boring office job, parenthood, or whatever.

Equally, given the reception to my early acting stuff was fair, it might have been better than that, large parts in large venues, a break in the movies, or whatever? If that was the case, would I now be living in LA on a more permanent basis than looking forward to a 10 day apartment break in said city? Now I’m not going to claim I would have been the ‘next’ Jean Harlow, or anything like that, but it might have happened. More likely I’d have been the next Clara Johnson, getting by on lots of ‘low in the credits’ acting roles, and doing other forms of acting, like photo shoots, playing characters at various ‘Conventions’ and the like? But yes, recognized as an actress, at least, which would have been fun.

Instead of which, I had to go out to work, to bring money into a home with a single mother, and though I tried to keep up the acting, it wasnt anything I could do seriously, while holding down another job, commuting to London, or whatever. Didnt stop me keeping up the battle of trying to be an actress (to some degree) until around the turn of the century, when the battle of acting roles, lost out to the job market, and I settled for a more ordinary life, on the whole.

But fine, doesnt stop me now, looking back and just wondering, if at 18, I’d headed off to drama school, where I might be now. Superstar? Bit part actress? Theater travelling actress? Or just someone looking back at her life, and wondering where her acting career got to? One thing is sure, unless we find a way to turn back time, and take that other choice, I will now never know! Still, 9 weeks today, I head to Hollywood, and in my dreams, someone might see me, see the potential actress again, and then…I know, almost certainly not!

The video is also showing my age, as its one of the punk classics. The Stranglers were renowned for not taking themselves too seriously, and this performance sort of proves it!

They call it madness?

To be fair, my knowledge of, and interest in college basketball is pretty much zero. I like my football, I love my baseball, and I can abide ice hockey. But basketball, really no interest, full stop. And thats the Pro stuff! College sports, it really is only football that I follow, in truth.

So yes, when it comes to March, and the fuss that is nowadays the final 68, known as March Madness, you think I’d ignore it completely, right? Wrong! It seems every year I talk myself into doing brackets, both at CBS, and over on the MC Forums, even when my knowledge of what is going on, or has been going on, is less than zero! Frighteningly, I tend to do quite well, which only proves that its an absolute lottery, lets face it!

My limited range of support rests on the 3 colleges from Kansas, and thats really it. This year, I’m told, Kansas State are on the bubble to get in, hope they do, but will find out for sure later today. Yes, they arent as good at basketball, as at football! Silly though, Kansas are dreadful at football, but one of the best in the nation at basketball, so you tell me! The 3rd Kansas team, Wichita State dont even play football, but are quite decent at basketball.

No, I have no plans to do anything more than make selections, pick brackets, and that will be it. Watch matches, you must be joking! But yes, like so many Americans, I’ll be selecting teams, only in my case, they wont mean a thing to me!

So yes, its Madness in more than one sense for me!

The video sums it up perfectly, its a group called Madness, singing a song called Madness!
