California, here we come

Yes, I know, a lot of the readers come here for the mind control stuff, but equally, the California stuff seems pretty popular, and given I love the state, I’m happy to provide some stuff about it too.

So fine, tonight, lets do a couple of California sports items, one of which many people will know about, the other, far less so.

Lets be wicked and start with the less popular one. Today, in my news feed, this piece came up

http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_29766643/fremont-first-synthetic-turf-cricket-field-u-s

To be fair, to some degree, cricket has been played for over 100 years in California, though I suspect numbers, other than ex-pats from cricket loving countries, may be a bit limited? But yes, there appear to be a few teams in the Bay area, a few more in the Los Angeles area, and maybe a few more around the state? But yes, its great to see a floodlit ground, with hopefully a decent synthetic turf wicket being created, I must say. No, I dont envision the sport suddenly becoming amazingly popular in California, but things like this can only help?

The other, better known recent news about sport in the LA area, is the return of the NFL, to the city. Not that I’m sure how good the Rams will be, on their return, though their draft gamble this week shows signs of positive attitude for the future, more so for when they move to Inglewood, hopefully in 3 years time. But yes, why they took my eye this week, was because of the announcement on Thursday, of the schedule for the forthcoming season. To be honest, before Wednesday, I hadnt realized they were playing my team, the Buffalo Bills this season, at home. Hey, I hadnt even realized they were playing the Bills until then!

Oh, the funny point, the date of that game? October 9, a date that last year saw me in LA. Put it this way, if I was there on that date this year, I know where I’d like to be! Thats right, the Coliseum, watching that game. What better way than that to break my NFL virginity, other than maybe a home game in Buffalo! Ironically, the week before, they are away to the team my dear friend Kate supports, and most Bills fan hate, the Patriots! Me, I’m not infatuated in anybody enough to hate other teams, especially ones supported by my wonderful friend.

But yes, the chance of me getting there, short of a generous benefactor, or a fluke lottery win at present, seems to be zero. Still, I guess I can dream for a bit, at least?

Right, the video. I found this song, and was surprised how much I liked it. I know nothing about the group, other than what I can find on Wikipedia at least, just found it on a random search on You Tube. Yes, what I’d like to be able to say in October, if not sooner.

What they’re forgetting is, this is 1922

I know, I know, its actually nearly 100 years on from that landmark, but you’ve guessed this blog is going back to the Flapper era, havent you? And if you havent, why not? Yes, this event appeared in my mail box this morning.

http://www.flyingscotsman.org.uk/events/lates-roaring-20s/

I know, and free too! Unfortunately for this poor, broke flapper girl, it costs a bit too much to get there, and back, especially as I would get back to Huddersfield after the buses had stopped for the night. And no, at the end of April, I am not walking up from town, wearing a flapper dress, and heels, at my age! I could get a taxi, but that all adds to the cost, and its all money I havent got! About £40 ($60) at a rough guess, there, or thereabouts, even being a good girl at the party, and not spending too much. Add in that I’d probably want to get my hair done 20’s style, and fine, its not going to happen. But yes, it would be fun. Only blessing is, because its free, I can keep it on my list, as a maybe, until its too late anyway!

Unless some “Mr Hearst” (or indeed Ms Hearst) wants to take, or treat this poor little “Marion Davies” to the party, and then…

Funnily enough, this time last year, I was getting ready to party in the past, too. An era slightly more recent, and somewhere a lot warmer than here! Yes, a year ago tomorrow, I first went to Hollywood for 10 days, in a hotel. Of course, I’ve since had 4 weeks in an apartment, but back then, a hopelessly excited lady was getting ready for her dream trip. And on that first Saturday, I headed to the Egyptian Theatre, for the most amazing 40’s night. It was a wonderful present, from 2 dear American friends, and I had a wonderful time. The only less wonderful thing? I ended up walking back to my hotel afterwards, in high heels, nearly a mile! I had never done that before, and hopefully never again. I can do it, but my knees truly hate it, so…

Of course, if you’d told me back then that finding a job, after getting back, would be nearly as hard as during the Depression, for a Flapper, I might not have been so excited about it all. But back in those glorious days…

Oh, one last thing, given the last post here was about LA, and the last post on the other blog was about special friends…One dear friend, who I met through Facebook, and who was responsible for one of my real delights of the October trip, the visit to The Magic Castle, posted this on my timeline, when she saw my praise for Mr Scully

I miss you, beautiful.

Ignoring all comments about me, and being beautiful, and needing glasses, you have no idea how wonderful that remark was, Eden. Yes, believe me, I’d rather be there too, at the moment.

Fine, the video. You can guess the song, surely? Not Julie Andrews, though, but Sutton Foster, who played the role on Broadway, I gather. PS, the music only lasts 4 minutes, not as long as it looks!

This could be a case of Dodgers, and Scully

Yes, fine, there’s a reason for the blog title, a slight tweak on a song lyric.

As I write this, I’m listening to the dulcet tones of Vin Scully, commentating on the opening home game of the Dodgers season. Ironically, this is almost certainly because I am in the UK, and ESPN UK are taking the coverage from TWC Cable, a privilege that far too many in LA cant do, because of the financial demands said cable company makes on other broadcasters in the area, to take their coverage. I know there has been efforts to get this sorted out this year, for a major reason, but I have no idea how successful that has been.

Yes, this marks the start of Vin Scully’s last season doing the commentaries for the Dodgers games, sad news. Fine, he’s been doing it for nearly 70 years, first in Brooklyn, then of course, for most of those years, in Los Angeles. To say he is probably the most legendary baseball commentary man, would be putting it mildly! Oh, and how many people in their late 80’s could be as sharp, and informative as him?

Irony is, I saw the Dodgers live a few times last season, but the only times I heard Vin, I was in the UK. I was either at the game, or it was the playoffs, and you got the national coverage, and besides, as I was in Hollywood, I probably couldnt have got the pictures of TWC, and the voice of Scully, for reasons mentioned above.

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard anyone say a bad word about Mr Scully. Mind, I have only listened to him for the last few years of his long career, but even so…I doubt they have!

In truth, short of a miracle, I’m never going to meet the legend, but hopefully over the course of this season, as well as tonight, I’ll hear him a few times more. Yes, fine, in an ideal world, I’d get back to Hollywood this year, go to a Dodgers game, and meet him. Yes, reality, none of that is going to happen without a miracle at present!

But fine, for the next couple of hours or so, before bed, I’m going to enjoy listening to him.

Oh, the video. Well, it mentions Scully, though not the one I’m listening to, tonight.

There is one more retirement this year I want to mention, David Ortiz, in Boston. Yes, fine, same issues with seeing him live this year, I guess?

Edited to add 2 things. Firstly the road leading up to Dodgers Stadium has now been renamed. Yes, you guessed it, Vin Scully Avenue!

Secondly, tonight, one of those pure Scully moments. One of the Arizona players is named Socrates, so we got one of those special stories, about the Ancient Greek of the same name, while he was batting. Heaven!

You really should know better

You know that old saying about, if something looks too good to be true, it probably is? Yes, 999.9 times out of 1000, it will be. Well, in truth, its probably 1000, out of 1000, but lets be kind, someone might have people’s kindness in mind. No, I dont believe that either!

But seemingly, there are a lot of fools out there, in Social Media land. Or people are just so greedy for a rip off deal, they dont realize they’re the one being ripped off!

On Facebook this morning, I noticed that a couple of my friends had fallen for this

which already has over 1100 people, in about an hour. The same people seemingly have a Disney World page, with the same offer, currently with over 4,000 jumped in. Yes, I know Disney is a big company, which is exactly why they wouldnt need to give away $1.5 million worth of freebies!

My suspicion, all these people are going to receive lots, and lots of spam mail in the very near future, and/or their details will be replicated by people in need of them.

Yes, its amazing how many people switch their rationality off, when they see an offer like this, isnt it?

Fine, the video, a wonderful song, which sums up what nearly a quarter of a million people need to do!

Things may be getting better?

Well, at least this week I’ve had one good piece of financial news, even if the money hasnt actually appeared in my bank yet. Yes, the matter of the rent benefit has been sorted out, a mix of good news, and bad.

The good news, I’m actually going to get more per week than I was expecting to get. The bad news, its not being back dated as I hoped, beyond the date I made the claim. At least I have the consolation, that as I’ve been paying my rent where possible, though the claim went in 7 weeks ago, I’m only 3 weeks behind in payment, so I’ll get some money to sort myself out, at least.

Yes, after this length of time, being waxed is not going to be fun! On the other hand, I will be so glad to get it done at last, you wont believe. Not yet sure if I will worry about getting nails done, I’ll think about that one for now. But brows especially, so need to lose some hair!

Thats not to say (ha ha), that if anyone has a few spare pennies laying around, I couldnt use them, but at least when this money arrives next week (so I’m told), immediate issues will be eased. Could be eased even more if the job interview is successful on Monday, but on current form…Yes, no breath held!

Fine, I might solve the issue tomorrow, given the National Lottery is creating 10 millionaires, instead of the normal 1, so I might go mad, and give it a go. Its been that sort of week, who knows? Mind, one of the 20 prizes of £20,000 would solve all issues for a couple of years or so! Unlikely, but the way the week is going (I won £5 on a free horse race competition yesterday), it might just happen!

All the same, just at the moment, things seem to be improving slightly, this video seems apt

The power of the voice

Oh goody, you’re in for a video treat tonight. Lets leave it at that, for the length of the blog, at least.

At the beginning of this week, on Fembot Central, someone wanted a woman to do a vocal piece, a half of a conversation between a man, and a fembot. So yes, I said that if no one younger offered to do it, I’d do it for him. I have done these things in the dim, distant past, long before you could record it on to a program, on a laptop, for sure.

And yes, seemingly, its a bit like riding a bike, I soon got the hang of it again, just like reading a script. Fine, its a bit weird, doing your line, waiting a few seconds, and then recording your next line, to give him space to edit his lines into the middle of it. I’ve read scripts before like that, but all players have been there, so its easier to judge the pace. When you’re recording by yourself, hmm?

The other snag I discovered, when it came to do my lines, was exactly how robotic I was meant to be, I forgot to ask. Yes, I know, I was pretty sure he didnt want the monotone robot style, given she was a fembot, created to look like a human. So I played it in a clipped, human way, apart from where she was having difficulties with a malfunction in her system.

Actually, for someone like me, not an expert in technology, I had more fun getting it together, and sending it back to him! I mean, I’m the one who wants to be controlled by computers, not controlling them! Yes, the .wav things (I did one where I used the letter b, one where I used beta, as I wasnt sure which he wanted) I saved them as, was very large, and wasnt going to willingly be sent by email, not even separately. Eventually, the technical blunder girl saved it to her One Drive thing on Hotmail, and sent him the link! Yes, I mean, if we needed it recorded, we were all in one place, and put it on to a tape recorder, or cassette recorder!

Yes, fine, I loved the experience, it was great fun doing something like that again, after so many years. No, I dont think the tape will be going to Hollywood studios, even if it was fun. I’ll see how much he liked my voice, if I passed, I might be doing more. Yes, I’d love a contract, with decent money, for doing these things, but realistically…nope!

So, to that video. In honesty, Ultravox created some great videos. Vienna is the obvious well known one, but the barely known Passing Strangers is one I love, for the whole vintage feel. This one is just plain powerful, and far superior to the other one they made, for this song

A full set of blondes

I could have told you about an interesting little project that I might be getting involved in, but lets leave that for later in the week!

So yes, lets have a blog full of blondes, including me!

Firstly, one of my favorite actresses/singers of all time, celebrated her birthday yesterday. If you believe some figures, she was 92, if you believe others, she was 94! Yes, Doris Day, movie star, singer, and well known animal lover reached a landmark again yesterday. And just think, but for a car crash, she may well have stuck to dancing, never been a singer, and without that, never a movie star…Yes, its amazing what fate can hold for some. Whichever birthday it was, I hope you had a good one, Doris.

Second one is me. Yes, being honest, I’ll be properly blonde again, after tomorrow. In an ideal world, I’d have had it colored about a month ago, when the dark hair began to show through too much. Understandably, due to the lack of money, I tried to put it off. But yes, fine, last week, it annoyed me too much, so as I can scrape the money together, its getting done! So yes, it will be back to a more Harlowesque sheen, and style, from tomorrow lunchtime on! I wish someone would create a color that made you genuinely permanently that color! It wouldnt be so bad if my hair went grey, a little (I’m in my late 50’s, after all), but no such luck.

Third one is Jean. Yes, she had a few quirks, which basically comes down to no nightwear, no bras, and no knickers. The first 2 I cant replicate, because of health issues with the former, and the size of my boobs in the second. The last one, well, I thought it sounded weird, until I tried it. Yes, like Jean, I discovered that my bits quite enjoyed being able to breathe. I only do it indoors, sometimes, never outdoors, mainly because its not as warm here as California!

Lastly, Blondie, aka Debbie Harry. No, nothing sensational about her, just a convenient video of her, at the David Bowie tribute concert.
